Sheriff Jud Smith said last last week that based on the preliminary investigation of the July 11 home invasion on Jessica Court, the armed suspects might have known the victim who was in the home at the time of the incident.
"We have reason to believe that the victim and the suspects may know each other," Smith said. "We are still investigating any connection and have spoken to the victim about the days and hours leading up to the incident."
The sheriff said the crime was "100 percent unrelated" to a home invasion two days earlier in Statham. The Statham Police Department is investigating that July 9 invasion. That suspect was described as a white male armed with a handgun. He was wearing a dark hoodie, ski mask and jeans. He fled in a dark-colored pick-up truck. The two suspects in Wednesday's home invasion were black men armed with a shotgun. They are believed to have driven away in a gray, four-door sedan.
"We feel that this was an isolated incident at this particular home," Smith said. "We do not feel the suspects are randomly targeting homes."

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office is searching for two masked men who on July 11 invaded a home on Jessica Court in Winder. Investigators believe the incident was isolated and poses no threat to other residents in the other area, but the suspects are not in custody.
The incident occurred shortly after 3:15 p.m. Wednesday when the two men, one of them armed with a shotgun, entered the home and ordered the male resident not to move. When the resident instead attempted to hide, one of the suspects fired the shotgun at him but missed. The resident, armed with a pistol, then shot back and the suspects fled. Neither suspect appeared to be injured.
While the incident appears isolated, deputies have beefed up patrols of the area. One suspect was described as a light-skinned black male, about six feet tall, and wearing jeans and a gray T-shirt. The other is a dark-skinned black male, about 5 1/2 feet tall, and his T-shirt was red and black. Both suspects have short-cropped hair. They may have driven away in a gray, four-door sedan, according to a press release.

Criminals are predators. Predators prey on the weakest of the population. They watch the herd and determine which one is the weakest. Then they sit back and wait for an opportunity to strike. (Watch animal planet or national geographic, you'll see). If a predator has a reason to believe that their prey may fight back, they will not strike.
If Criminals have reason to believe that their potential victim is armed, they wont take the chance of being carried by 6.
It also prevents tyranny from our own leaders if they were to take the wrong path one day as well. A Necessary Evil. If one day the U.S. appears so weak (which probably means continues down the path we are already headed) to another nation, that that nation decides we are weak enough to be overtaken, well you will be glad some of us have a firearm then.
We do not need to be quick to go to our guns as citizens or Law Enforcement, I think of them as a tool of last resort. Banning Guns would be the worst mistake we could make though.

There was less crime during the fronteir days during the growth of the West than there was in the "Civilized" East. The reason is, that crime was at such a low rate, that it became more pronounced and glamourized when it occurred.

2) I'm tired of people screaming about how "if you take all the guns away things would be so wonderful." Really??? You don't need to go too far back in history, in fact, just jump on a plane. Kenya, the Congo, Nigeria, Somalia, Guatemala, and Mexico, hundreds of people are slaughtered daily with pitch forks, machetes, hammers, shovels, and clubs.
3) A firearm in and of itself, is a paperweight. It is the person with the weapon that develops the idea, decides on the tool to use to carry out their idea, and picks the time and place to put the idea into action.
4) The reality of the situation, when a community publically promotes the ownership of firearms and encourages it, the crime in that community goes down. There are tons of statistics to support it. When San Francisco talked about banning firearms, crime in Los Angeles dropped and many of the criminals that were well known in Los Angeles moved to San Francisco. Look at Georgia Tech, every time there is a robbery on campus, it is immediately followed by 3 or 4 the next day because the news media broadcasts how students cannot carry a firearm on campus.
When DC removed its ban on firearm ownership, they had the largest decrease in crime in history. Kennesaw, GA, consistently rated the Safest City in the Nation because of its Gun Ownership Ordinance.
Face it, if criminals believe that their victim has the ability to fight back, they will move on to a less opposing victim.
