BCSS ends FY2011 in the black

The Barrow County School System was in the black for FY2011, although that may now seem like little consolation as the board of education struggles now to balance its FY2013 budget amid more state funding cuts and a lower tax digest. But for FY2011, the BCSS had a strong financial result, building its General Fund reserves to nearly $15 million of which $12 million was undesignated and available to help fill in revenue shortfalls.

General Fund Reserves, by definition, mean the funds are not designated. Therefore, why mention 15 million if 3 million are designated? Also, why report on FY11 in July of 2012? The FY2012 budget has now ended, as of June 30, 2012. How much of the 12 million in reserves from FY11 remain as of June 30, 2012? That would be relevant NEWS.
It sounds like to me that the BCSS is trying to "spin" good news rather than just disclose the information.

This story didn't come from the BCSS. The state has just now posted the FY2011 audit, so we did a story for the record about what was in it. Under the new accounting rules, local governments now have to show what is designated reserves, ie. for some future payments, and what is undesignated, that is available today. That's why it is shown that way in the story. As for how much is now in reserves, go buy a paper and you will find that information. This is only a small part of the full story.

So did I miss the stories you/paper decided not to print/report about the Madison BOE, Jackson BOE, Commerce BOE, Jefferson BOE, and the Banks Co. BOE's FY 2011 audit reports? Or, could it be that someone is trying to find a 'shinning light' in the midst of a 'dark cloud' which is covering the Barrow Co. School District? Otherwise, why not report on the state's audit for the other five (5) school districts in the Mainstreet News servicing area?

Not all audits are released at the same time by the state.

How can they not be in the black with their outrageously high budget they are so generously given to begin with! If they had dinky budgets like everyone else they would be seeing red !

If the BOE keeps doing what there doing to there employees your not going to have anyone left .Look how many people have left now and there are more to leave to this is the month the employees have to start paying there insurance .Start taking money from the people that have the high dollar pay that do nothing .Alot of employees are getting tired of losing more and more money every year .Insurance goes up every year ,no pay raises and now bus drivers will not be able to do field trips .How would you live on a bus drivers salary you couldn't and than there are these drivers getting netbooks because they don't want to have to keep up with paper work .All we ever hear well at least you have a job keep it up and ya'll will be driving the buses because the drivers will be looking else where for better pay and better benefits ...
