With two former commissioners trying to reclaim their seats on the Barrow County Board of Commissioners, local bloggers are resurrecting the airport-expansion issue that in 2008 felled many county officials and the previous chairman of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners. But there have been at least two indications over the past week that the issue is a red herring — that is, an attempt to mislead voters in the District 1 race between former commissioner Jerry Lampp and candidate Joe Goodman and in the District 2 race between former commissioner Bill Brown and candidate Kenny Shook.
Former chairman Doug Garrison on Sunday submitted to the newspaper a letter to the editor defending the actions of his administration and the previous commissioners and saying the airport-expansion bloggers are wrong.
For the full story, see the July 4 issue of the Barrow Journal.

Seriously? Red Herring?
All the positive comments about the airport are what MAY happen.
Caterpillar execs MAY be flying out of the airport
Guard helicopters MAY get funded
Airport MAY bring in manufacturing
Hopes and Wishes about what MAY happen, but haven't happened and aren't likely to happen.
I MAY win the lottery
Someone MAY show up and buy my house
Odds are the same that I will hit the 6 magic numbers and the airport will bring revenue into Barrow.
Funny this surfaced with the old airport BOC is forming.
Brown's sign are right next to Garrison property signs -- That should tell you something!
The "rosy" reports are coming from GDOT -- That should tell you something!
After all, they have not bankrupted all the cash cows.
Maybe, its from ...
Glowing Cover Reports by State agencies with vested interests (GDOT – Airports bring all that money)...
Spin / PR articles from the candidates / supporters given the credence as actual news reports
(I.E. Any article about Yearwood in the Barrow County News and now Garrison's spin on how the Airport BOC did not spend the county into financial ruin)
Red herring? Really, from the same people that left the county broke...
Mr. Shook, as a voter in your district, I'd like to know what the two "indications" are/were, so please ask Mr. B, if he calls you and then let us the voters know.
BTW - You have my vote.
Your comment " a weekly "wipe" of a newspaper. Lost me as a supporter. Not very classy at all. When you resort to name calling you have lost the high ground. Plus, this paper from what I have seen and from Mr. Buffington, does not pull punches. If the Barrow Journal existed when Garrison was in charge it may be a different county right now.Another point is why should Mr Buffington call you? You call him or E-mail. I have contacted him before and he has always responded. Or send in a letter like Garrison did. I bet he would publish it.
The Ronald Reagan v Gerald Ford of 1976 (that lost) did not change his principles to win in 1980 to win against Carter or his 49 to 1 win against Mondale state victory in 1984.
The measure of a man is in his action not his word because the meaning of words can be changed over time not the history of his action.
Remember, Shook has not changed his position in response to the sway of the current Airport SPIN/PR press unlike Yearwood with the current TSPLOST tide.
Character matters...
I was a member of the "CCBC" that helped fight the proposed runway expansion in 2007-2008. As a member of that group I researched the issue using the best tools available: old newspapers, web links and discussions with dozens of folks (some of which were informative, and some of which were kooky). In essence, I used the same tools as journalists with this newspaper and reputable publications everywhere. If I was going to support a cause (which I have always been loath to do publicly), I wanted to ensure my facts were correct. Perhaps it's a by-product of being a graduate of the UGA Grady School of Journalism, but I knew nothing was more discrediting to a cause than blatantly publishing false information.
I also spoke with those on the "other side" of the issue. Specifically, Chairman Garrison, Commissioner Brown (my district representative), COC President Tommy Jennings and other community leaders. We discussed the information I gleaned from my sources and their views of the issue. We also invited each of them to attend the CCBC informational meetings that were held during that period. Commissioner Brown and Mr. Jennings did attend at least one meeting, and were both offered the opportunity to speak and field questions at these events. To their credit each man did, which required fortitude before an unfriendly audience.
Some may find this surprising, but the conversations I had with these officials were professional and cordial. Although I'm sure they were annoyed by the perceived nuisance the CCBC caused, our discussions were civil and respectful. Even if they did all end with varying degrees of "agreeing to disagree". I hold no personal animus for these gentlemen, or any others who supported the proposed runway expansion.
However, for those on the "other side" to now cast aspersions on the findings of the CCBC is disturbing. And blatantly wrong. I understand the truth is twisted much too frequently during political campaigns, but if members of the former BOC and Airport Authority now claim that plans never existed, meetings were never held and land was never purchased with the stated intent of lengthening the runway, well...then they are simply being intellectually dishonest.
The plans DID exist. The CCBC was not comprised of a bunch of peasants with pitchforks who suddenly all awoke one day and all decided through some sort of “mind melt” to invent this issue. The Barrow County News, Braselton News, Gwinnett Daily Post, Athens-Banner Herald and other media outlets did not all spontaneously conspire to make up the story of the runway expansion and visions of a second Atlanta airport. This was not a political conspiracy to oust Chairman Garrison, Commissioner Brown and Commissioner Lampp from office. Rather, in my opinion, the CCBC represented the most American of ideals which we celebrate this week: Freedom. A group of people, representing a disparate social and economic spectrum, coalesced around a cause and eventually did the unthinkable: prevailed against the government and special interests.
I really hoped we were passed this. I’m especially baffled this issue is being resurrected by the same politicians it helped doom 4 years ago. Perhaps I’m a wild-eyed dreamer, but I’m more concerned with plans for the future of Barrow County than anything that occurred in the past. If the platforms of current candidates include supporting the runway expansion, I would like to know now so we can have a healthy debate on the topic and let the voters decide if this is the most prudent allocation of precious taxpayer dollars.
In closing, while the CCBC website that gave links to every one of their sources is long dormant, I still have that information along with other documents. I’m sure that the CCBC, and me personally, will be discredited in subsequent posts by those who still seek a different future for Barrow County. But that’s okay. It’s always easy to kick the little man, but I know the truth is with us. If anyone is interested, I’ll be happy to provide every bit of evidence we uncovered during our research.
Then you can decide for yourself whether this is a “Red Herring”. Or more aptly, a political “Scarlett Letter”.
Lampp gave his expand the airport speech.
Claimed the execs from Caterpillar would be flying in and out of the Barrow Airport.
Either he didn't learn much four years ago, or he's an arrogant old fool
You know how to use a computer because you are on the internet now while writing on this blog.
People the evidence showed that the commissioners LIED to the public. They are lying now.
Don’t take my word … take the time and research this issue yourself. Draw a conclusion from the facts and not from what you read on a blog, listen to bu so called “Christians” in their speeches or writing to the paper.
Make an informed decision. Not a lazy decision. This will cost us all.
I think that we can make our Airport better, I have no problem with extending the runway SOME, But I would want to establish firm controls over what & who comes/goes. A Longer runway could mean parts shipments for Catepillar, more corporate jets, and even maybe a SEMI-DAILY commuter flight or two, maybe we could have a jump flights TO Hartsfield or Greenville. This makes people have a reson to COME HERE and Spend money, see business options, growth potential of Barrow Co, bost our economy... WE LACK REASONS for Barrow to be more than a Pass-Thru County. This could be an opportunity. We should get it while we have the option, later we may not have an option.
We need to have options for our community, I would vote for a longer runway, But would NEVER, repeat NEVER, once again NEVER vote or allow us to be considered for a 2nd Hartsfield, (they dont even need one anyway) but Options are good for other business. If you have a bigger Pool you can host a Tournaments if you Want to, or be a training site, or not...But without it you are just another small pool like everyone else so you have no competitive advantage, it is not a ALL or NONE.
Brisco Field has 1/10 of the potential of Winder-Barrow, as it is almost landlocked. But We wouldn't want any of those GWINNETT People spending any MONEY in Barrow, or any ADVANTAGE on them Ever(We just get their leftovers now). We can let all the other counties land all of the opportunities because your mind is closed?
I must assume you choose to live near our Airport? but dislike Aviation.. That like me disliking Truck noise but moving near a Truckstop.
BUT at the same time promise never to have commercial flights of any kind...
According to the Airport crowd, We have promises in hand for the Airport's future to use it to drive all kinds of business to the county...
We don't have the infrastructure to support major manufacturing but we're going to "Look into it... in the future"...
The Airport was created with Pork Barrel spending from Federal government for a local spend-it-all politician...
The Airport expansion (What else would you call it?) was a Realtor's (Garrison) wet dream...
Paid for with run away BOC (Lampp & Brown) spending that damn near bankrupted the county (at least 7+ years of deficit budgets).
All the while, the CSX train runs almost every 15 minutes or so... through Barrow
Wouldn't it have been better to give Caterpillar land around an existing rail head then hoping and praying that either the Guard gets the funding for its helicopters or maybe some jet gets lost on its way to Athens.
1500 jobs vs maybe 50 promised, in the future sometime, maybe, if the economy doesn't tank again...
How is that airport working for you Barrow?
The whole process for getting an airport approved for scheduled service is very open, very detailed and very much controlled by the FAA.
Just because we, the citizens of Barrow, stood up, spoke up and voted out the airport BOC doesn't mean it never happened, or couldn't happen again!
This is WHY we should not elect Brown or Lampp. They WERE / ARE the BOC airport gang we stood up to
Graham will be the Republican Executive Leader
Brown, Lampp, Berry, Parks, Hendix will be the GOB (aka Democrats in Republican guise) legislative branch
Nothing will get done. The GOB (aka airport gang) will block her at every turn and will be taking their orders from Garrison, who REALLY wanted a 2nd term, but made the mistake of announcing way too early and learned Barrow County citizens hadn't forgotten how he and his gang spend the county into a big deep financial hole.
I don't understand this fixation on Garrison's supposed power over Lampp and Brown.
Garrison's letter is a PR / Spin piece to rewrite the facts. However, this article clouds the bias and nature of an up coming editorial as a Real News Article. As they say, "A fair and balanced" News Article would include both sides of the issue.... Call the man, Mike
The "lede" appears to be biased against Goodman and Shook.
The "lede" gives the impression the BJ is in support of Garrison, Lampp and Brown
In a 30 sec world, the "lede" is what matters.
It may generate sales, BUT it also mis"ledes".
Also, I can’t remember the airport authority member’s name, but he was sitting directly behind me and makes the statement “I can’t listen to this any longer” then stood up and stormed out. He was talking about the chairman denying what was going on. The other gentleman who at that time was the elected member in district 1 was asked at this meeting about what he knew and about who had bought up all the land around the airport. Of course it was all denied. But in fact after someone took the time and went thru the counties records they found what had been bought in the surrounding area around the airport. At the next BOC meeting after finding these documents the BOC was asked about it. And of course the BOC members who bought all the land up tried to explain away what happened so they could not be seen as having inside information and then went and bought up the land thinking the project would go through.
This is just a couple things that happened during this time. There are many more things that happened that the average person in Barrow County does not know about and the old BOC still to this day says it never happened and we had it wrong.
The documents are still out there if you want to search for them. Don’t be fooled by these people running for office. The truth has a funny twist coming from them.
We had the conversation because my husband is an exec with a major international company and he flies out every week.
They had grandiose plans for the airport and were quite proud of them. Why my husband would be able to not only fly out on the corporate jet, but be able to catch a plane into Atlanta, Charlotte, and other places.
So when they say these plans never existed, YES, YES THEY DID!
The conversation about my neighbor? Well according to them, he had the right to trespass because "Lady, he's been hunt'n that land long before you brought it and he can continue to hunt if he wants. That's how things are done here in Barrow County".
It seems to be more promises not to fly commercial flights into Barrow...
More rehash about what MAY happen in the next 10 years...
A greater dependence on the Federal Government (Air National Guard)
More, We don't have the infrastructure to support major manufacturing in the county...
So, this "NON PR/SPIN" article says...
More, Promises not use the airport for commercial endeavors
More, Dependence on the Federal Government
No, Infrastructure to support Manufacturing,
but
Promises to "Look into it" in the future
More Promises about what MIGHT happen NOT about want HAS happened..
Hey, If the Airport is the engine Did anyone put the gas in the tank?
Folks in this county are tired of it. It get's us nowhere, solves nothing, and simply put, adds nothing positive or constructive to the conversation. Barrow county must move forward, not live in the past. Let's move on as a team, and solve our problems, and leave the mudslinging and personal attacks at home in the closet.........
DuWayne R. Anderson
Winder, GA
These men have lied to the people of BC and continue to lie today. They do not deserve to be re-elected for this reason. Their trust has been removed.
Can you not get your head out of your b__t long enough to listen? Shut your mouth and listen and you might learn something moron!
The same team that spend the county into financial ruin, took a man's land and then lied about it.
Seriously DuWayne, You REALLY think Brown woke up honest this morning?
Sic sempervivum tyrannis
Grudges don't work anymore folks, so stop using them against candidates running for office. You can vote for someone else, without all the ugly personal attacks.....
DuWayne
1-800-DuWayne
Seriously DuWayne, If Brown REALLY wanted to talk to voters, he would do as Shook did and put his number out there so ANYONE can call him.
If a man is applying for a job (Brown), then why would he send his wife (DuWayne) to the interview?
Talked to Shook, Talked to Brown, Voting Shook
As for Mr. Shook, well he apparently walkied into our subdivision and introduced heimself to a couple of neighbors as "commissioner-elect Shook". And we haven;t even had a primary yet. No way Mr. Shook, that is a gross mis-represention, nbot too mention that silly little card you had taped to our mailbox. I'm voting Brown. Have talked to him before and he came to our Neighborhood watch party. I don't always agree with what he says or how he votes but he has ALWAYS, without fail, given the straight answer.
What a Hornets nest over making the Airport better than the other Smaller/Medium Airports in NE Georgia.
What companies are looking at when they decide to build is:
1. Tax Breaks -- how much will you give me to build here?
2. Infrastructure -- does the county have the infrastructure to support the operation
3. Ease of accessing major transportation corridors IE.. Trains, Interstate, major roads
then comes work force, education, housing, and finally, where can I land my corporate jet?
Flew back from San Antonio with an exec from Caterpillar on Sunday. Had a nice long conversation with him on that 2 + hour flight.
Learned that production was down in Indiana, they were ramping up production in China and will be making skid steers at the Athens plant.
Not once, did the topic of where will we land the corporate jet come up.
The reason the two are trying to get re-elected is because of the following. Very close to the last BOC meeting before they were voted out Lampp made a remark from the BOC bench about him and Brown buying all the land around the airport and now would be stuck with it because nobody would want it. They would not even be sale it for what they gave for it muchless making a profit.
Well guess what they still have this land and if the airport gets bigger then they can sale thier land and make a big profit.
They will be spending YOUR TAX MONEY so they can sale thier land and run home with the profits.
Is this what you want Barrow County? Men making large amounts of money off of land deals using your tax money.
Thought about looking into this? I know the plans existed to move 82 and double the size of the airport.
Not too hard to figure this one out.
Story please.
Seems like common sense in the land of hype and scare.
That land isn't worth much until you look at the airport expansion plan overlay and the future use map for the county.
It is unusual for a county to have hundreds of millions of dollars available for an expansion modeled on the 2006 proposed airport ALP.
Were those county funds in place, and if so, what in Hades happened to the money?
Mr. Lampp didn't need this airport expansion, obviously he has money which wasn't gotten becuase of greed.
Here it is four + years after the fact, Garrison and the Airport BOC (Lampp & Brown) are still explaining the obvious...
Are all the people in Barrow County slow or just don’t care what happens behind their backs? Do you not care how or why you tax money is being spent?
Do you not care what implications this reeks of?
People I work hard for my money, just as you do, and I do not like it wasted for my benefit, or so told for my and the counties benefit, while BOC members make great gains off of our backs and tax money.
Many, many things could be improved in our county with the money this airport deal would cost.
People please stand with me and keep these men from doing this to you, me and the other tax payers of Barrow County. Do not re-elect Lampp or Brown.
Get a grip coward. You need to stand up and be counted in order to make a stand. Hiding in the bushes doesn't count.
So, like you (Sheesh) those with property do have reason to keep "Anonymous".
Don't think so? Why do you think the County Attorney's budget is increased by 100+ percent every year.
I'm #5 of the list of attorney cost for this year alone. All I'm doing is trying to protect what's mine against a petty little man.
What's worse: The bully who beats you up or the crowd that stands around watching?
So, what's your name?
Yet you call me out because I did not use a believable name like “Sheesh”. I have been reading these blogs since they started and I only know two people (Mike Buffington, DuWayne Anderson) who are who they say they are.
I am using Tom Watson this time, so does that make my story believable? Nobody knows when someone uses a name if in fact they are who they say they are. So who gives a rip what they post by? Made up names are just as good as real ones. I can open the phone book and pick a new name every time I post.
But, the real reason is that if you post your real name then the fools and kooks like you can look up your name in the phone book or internet to see where you live. Then you can call them and leave obscene message or threaten someone or go to the residence and cause trouble.
So to close we can’t use our real name because of all the “Sheesh’s” in this community like you.
Thomas Jefferson
"Sheesh" this is another name today.
Maybe there are others that has done this or voted against Lampp.
