Within the next few months, Winder’s city government may install new security cameras downtown to enable police to monitor activity along North Broad Street. On the agenda of a June 14 meeting of the Winder City Council’s Public Safety Committee was a proposal that initially called only for the installation of security cameras at the Rose Hill Cemetery and at the Winder Community Center and the adjacent Jug Tavern Park. But Councilman Travis Singley, who chairs the committee, suggested additional cameras for the downtown area to help business owners and the public feel safer. He said the cameras also would assist the Winder Police Department in emergencies.
For the full story, see the June 20 issue of the Barrow Journal.

Crime is harder to commit with an audience. The cameras might witness the crime, but they're not likely to prevent anything, and odds are they won't see enough to be useful.
Doesn't Winder have bicycle police? Give them special permission to ride the sidewalks. Encourage them to stop and chat with people. Cameras detach the police from the community and its concerns.
But not to overlook the Connection, or really the LACK OF CONNECTION between our Police Dept and the Citizens (Not just those citizens who volunteer for stuff, but any & every citizen who attempts contact or they contact), The Chief & Department seems to think that Changing the Decals on the cars/trucks will SOLVE THEIR IMAGE PROBLEM, No it just made many who were benind the department mad, it wastes money and IT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM, it is Fundimentally how the Officers and Dept relate to the People who employ them. I like the idea of proactive steps to protect our city, BUT the way WPD functions now, it will mean less positive interation and more of the big brother us verses them. I want the WPD and CITIZENS on the SAME TEAM.
New Decals will solve that I guess...
Of Course, if we move ALL the COMMERCE CENTERS out away from downtown, or Outside the City Limits, That REALLY HELPS Too...
Who thinks ahead in this town? What happens to the centers of town when everything moves out?
Second we need to attract small businesses to move into the empty store fronts. Businesses attract people! Concept that seems to be lost on Barrow. Maybe some of that money driving through will actually stop and spend it here
Third we need to correct the problems with traffic and so many semis clogging the streets. I personally take the long route so I won't have to drive through downtown Winder
Fourth, we need police that interact with the citizens. The bike cops could and should stop and chat with store owners, customers and anyone else they see. A highly visible police force is more of a deterrent than a camera.
And finally fifth, the cameras, just in case the "new" "people friend" bike patrol misses something

I suggest to make TRAFFIC better and open up a more dynamic layout of the City, they need to may GA11/Monroe Highway (AND/or GA53) Cross MAY Street and Go North around and towards the other side of town (connecting to GA82, and North Broad or Father out Connecting to GA11-North and back to GA53-North) It will open up TRAFFIC and Possible Commerce Areas both.
Downtown has Opportunities (if we dont tear it all down).. It needs the RIGHT Promoter and someone who can help bring it all together, with vision, sell it, help find financing, bring the potential businesses in.
I say Annex those outskits areas in now anyway.
I like the Traffic Bypass idea on the Eastern side of Downtown for TRUCKS passing Thru the city with No Intention of stopping in the city, this moves them to a bypass road.
We paid Eberhardt's Legal Fees, We spent money to put new decals on a perfectly marked Police Tahoe already, we dropped the billing ball on a half million in unpaid billing/fees, we keep spending or losing money, we need to prioritze better, bring more into the city, plan better for the future, annex some properties(we support areas already), and make something happen downtown.
We need Officers to BE THERE when possible, I am sorry that a candidate had a challenge to his residency, THAT WAS HIS challenge though, not the City's (He choose to have a odd residnece that got challenged by an opponent, sorry... and I like Mr Eberhardt). The Ship IS looking Better but I want to SEE MORE VISION.
