Mayor wants to attract restaurants to Bethlehem

Bethlehem mayor Sandy McNab said Monday night that in order to move forward, the town needs to look at updating its alcohol ordinance. “Until we get Sunday alcohol sales, we are just beating our head against the wall,” the mayor said. “If we want to bring in Applebees or Longhorns, we have to get on the same playing field or these places will just go up the road.” Voters in Bethlehem will decide in July whether to allow convenience stores to sell beer on Sundays. However, another vote would be required to allow it by the drink in restaurants, McNab said.

IF any of those entities show up and want to locate within the Town of Bethlehem, they will make the Request at that time, then the Town can then Vote to approve it, There is NOT a need to rush this vote, you have no requests at this time, and if they Like the Location, THEY WILL ask for approval, locations "Up the Road" are not relevant, if those are more attractive to the business, that is why they will be choosen, not because you didn't pre-emptively pass a Alcohol on Sunday ordinance BEFORE they ever even look there. They will come and say, Approve "---" and we may located here, Do it when you need to... “Until we get Sunday alcohol sales, we are just beating our head against the wall,” the mayor said, No, You just have no concept at all about business thats all.

because with the law comes the license pricing for those licences, so why would a company scout a location that first is lacking the option for the purpose of all or part of thier business, spend more money bargaining on the words in the proposed law, then finding the cost for license is over the price range for the projected earnings and thus they can just save time by not scouting location that at the start do not have already law that welcomes the prospect of the business that must hold specil use licenses be it liquor, barber, landfill, adult bookstore, production company whatever the case. not having in place makes it for many scouting teams an automatic pass on the location, most do not want to have to court and smooze when if the law is already in place they save much monies and have a known rather then hey this could be but....

in an area where Sunday sales aren't allowed when they can go just down the street, across the border into another county/city that allows it?

If we want to attract new businesses, be it Apple Bees, or caterpillar, we need to lay the foundation BEFORE hand.

We need to look at what it will take to attract them,put it in place and then go after the business.

It was my understanding that Georgia state law allowed alcohol to be sold in restaurants on Sunday's anyway. Am I wrong?

Also, for my two cents, I think it is the dumbest idea to have individual towns and counties voting on whether to allow sales to be on Sunday. It should be a state wide referendum. The fact is, there are 150+ counties in this state (which in itself is way to many; way too much government), and sometimes nearly a hundred towns/municipalities within them. Each person in some counties will have to take a course on which places do and do not sell alcohol. Try to think about people coming in from out of state. Talk about the pain in the neck figuring things out if they were going to attempt to buy alcohol on a Sunday.

If yankee drunkards don't like the fact that booze don't flow on Sunday, they can go back to the sot-state that spawned 'em. The reason that DUIs kill & maim daily is that the country is filled with alkys and the shysters that feed off of them. So, it just breaks my heart that these drunkards are inconvenienced in the ossification of their livers.

Barrow County has it's fair share of DUIs. Not only that, but people here drink alcohol on Sundays; they are just forced to buy it on Saturday or drive to a county that sales it should they run out on Sunday.

you can buy beer on sunday in bethlehem. at publix, bp gas station, shell gas station. also foget longhorns they are building at gateway park below the athens regional care.

outside the city limits with a Bethlehem address?

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be) those are outside the city limits.

Not sure what difference it makes, but come to think of it, you can buy alcohol on Sundays at various locations

True, out side the city limits,but near bethlehem.Bethlehem needs to expand the city limits outward for the taxes.This would help the town to move forward.maybe a stop light at hwy 11.
