Driver killed in early morning wreck on Memorial Day

A man driving a truck with Barrow County plates was killed in a wreck on Memorial Day when the truck left Atlanta Highway and slammed into a tree just over the county line near Pete Dickens Road in Bogart.

The driver, whose identity was not immediately released, was pinned in his vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters from Barrow and Oconee counties, according to a source with Barrow County Emergency Services.

The man died at the scene.

Responding from Barrow County were fire engines from Station 1 and Station 3, the med unit from Station 3, and a battalion chief.

Engine 1 initiated the extraction and then turned over the task to firefighters who arrived from the Oconee County Fire Department. Also responding was National EMS Inc., a company that provides emergency medical services for Oconee County.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the cause of the wreck.
