The Barrow County Board of Education on May 23 filled four vacant principal positions by promoting two assistant principals and by hiring two new administrators from other Georgia systems. However, a fifth principal position opened up at the same called meeting, when the BOE accepted the resignation of Jeb Gregory, the support services director and principal of the Barrow County Alternative School.
Also leaving the system are Dorann Mansberger, the assistant principal of Apalachee High School; Dennis King, the school system’s plant operations director, and more than two dozen additional employees who worked mostly in the classroom.
The school board discussed the personnel actions in a closed session preceding the 6:30 p.m. commencement exercises for Barrow County College and Career Academy.
The board came out of the closed meeting and took two votes, one to name Leigh Sears as the new principal of Russell Middle School, and the other to approve the remaining list of personnel actions.
The votes were split up because BOE member Bill Bramlett is the brother of Sears and had to abstain from the vote. Rickey Bailey also abstained but did not explain his reason. The second vote on the other personnel actions was unanimous.
School superintendent Wanda Creel said after the meeting that the four schools' governance teams recommended all four of the principal appointments, and she concurred with their recommendations.
The new principal of Yargo Elementary School is Diane Bresson, an assistant principal at County Line Elementary School.
The new principal of County Line Elementary School is Jeff Koch, a high school assistant principal in Bartow County.
The new principal of Statham Elementary School is Swade Huff, a middle school principal from Fulton County.
The school system’s notice of personnel actions did not disclose the reason for each employee’s separation or the employees' positions or job locations. These were the names on the list: Pamela Dollar, Haley DerCola, Ryan Free, David Ly, Lisa Pinner, Vanessa Woeste, Tamara York, Shoshana Rowell, Anita Fulford, William Harrell, Benjamin Highfield, Shelly Jenkins, Kathleen Paige Cole, Kristina Little, Samara Calvin, Jeffrey White, Lissa Korasick, Jennifer Hintze, Megan Alessi, Joel Bacon, Leslie Whitehead-O’Neal, Mavis Shreve, Carolyn Van Gallera, Michelle Maioli, Melanie Perry, Michelle Sidner and Kimberly Smith.
My wife works in the system, there are positive and negatives about Creel, however, you can see how many people are leaving the system for other opportunities, which to me is a "Red Flag" that people are not happy or they would stay.
I will not comment one way or another, however, I would say go to the meetings and see which BOE members go along with her and those who do not. Then make your opinion
Not saying they are bad choice, but they were asked to be on the governance team by the administration for the first go around.
Im sure this would not go well for her since her contract is coming to a close for next year
...this is what I was referring to...
The last I heard was that school principals lead the governance teams, but starting next year the head of the governance teams are elected. Maybe you folks should get involved at that level and get elected to lead these governance teams. Let's see how good you do.
Personally, I'm all for change to make things better, but at what cost to human feelings and relationships? If teachers aren't happy or are on pins and needles all the time and subjected to unexpected and unwarranted changes, are the children getting a quality whole-hearted education? Is it healthy to have teachers scared their name will need to be pulled out of a hat to be sent to another school? I feel terribly for my good friend who has suffered over the past few weeks. Schools are more than just businesses. They are families made of real people with real feelings and connections with one another. Students see this love and prosper from it. Plucking people from one place and putting at another may seem strategic to some, and in some cases that is true, but trying to fix something that isn't broken and making people miserable....?
Complaceny is never a good thing.
The school system is in trouble losing such great teachers and other staff. David Ly is an amazing teacher who made learning fun as well as keeping the kids positive while building social skills that are well needed. He will be missed very much!
Mr.Gregory is amazing!!! He is such a loss from our school system as over the years he has worn many hats and did great at all of them. He has helped my child over the years to get his education and be able to stay in school. "Least rest. environment" is to keep special ed children in their home school and not ship them around the Barrow Co schools to who ever wants to deal with a special need child for a little while. Mr. Gregory cares about his students and we need more people like him in our school system.
County Line has a strong teaching staff and they have not had the admin, suport since Dr. Johnson left the school. This is about more then just a job this is about our future and our children are the future. We need everyone of the classrooms and schools filled with people who are going to make a difference.
Our school system is making a mistake just throwing away caring hard working people. Our custodians have families too and just signing them off to a contract company is this really saving the system money or just keeping the higher paid people's checks coming?
The kitchen workers are so streched and over worked it's unfair and they need additional people not people trying to do so much that it's bad on their health.
Barrow Co parents we need to make a difference and speak up for our kids and people who have made a difference in each of our families!
Please forgive any mis-spelled words I am very angry!!!
Thankfully, we are a strong group... we will stick together and support one another and we will welcome our new administration with open arms as we move forward doing what is best for our kids.
Our children need to learn more then what is going to be on the CRCT too while I am addressing the suport for the teachers. Thats all we hear is what is on the CRCT and there is more to learn then just to prepare for a test.
There were several barrow county applicants for the principal's positions that have given decades of dedication, commitment, and hard work to their school. The children know them and they know the children. Not to mention the staff. But Dr. Creel apparently wasn't "too impressed with the barrow county applicants" and chose people from out of county. What a slap in the face to these people. She's the sorriest excuse for a superindent that I've ever seen. All she's doing is tearing this county apart. BOARD MEMBERS NEED TO FIX THIS BEFORE ELECTION TIME. You have entire schools in uproars!!!!!
Some of the Governance Teams that worked at frantic pace this past Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday did NOT even have a Quroum present at meetings where candidates were selected for interviews or during the so-called interviews. And, several of the committees did not have the required particpants, ie. school-based administrator, student, 3-4 parents/bussiness partners, 3-4 teachers, and ex-officio member as required in the Barrow County Charter Petition.
Meaning, Creel did not even follow the guidelines in the petition she wrote.
BOE, didn't ya'll hire her because of her expertise with Charter Districts?
Well, you got an expert in 'smoke & mirrors', 'deceit', 'deception','disassebling', and 'disabling' our school system, Barrow County.
She has done all of that in only two years. What is left for her to do in her two-year extension?
Mike Buffington, is it true that the BOE extended her contract in the midst of this turmoil? Please find out and report. That should be public knowledge.
I serve on a Governance Team at an uneffected school, I wouldn't sit back and not let me voice be heard. I haven't heard any Governance complaints from Russell. If what you are stating is fact, what is the point of a Governance Team.
I also DO NOT agree with extending Dr.Creel's contract with so many complaints from parents. Does anyone on the BOE have children in Barrow Co School?
You must apply by 12:00pm today at the Republican Party headquarters by the train tracks in Winder. There is $18 fee to apply.

Please, if you want to see change, go and sign up!
Let your voice be heard. Contact the board members, and media if you have to. I'm sure that the way she handled the meetings and interviews without the required participants carries some sort of consequences. Let's get her out of our county!!
THIS STATEMENT MY WANDA CREEL IS A LIE!!!!
Dr. Creel has decimated this school system and will increase her tyrannical rule as long as Barrow employees allow themselves to be intimidated and County residents don't ask ALL the questions. There should be no trust for those in power to have their children's best interests at heart, when clearly they don't; that faith has been violated. The "social media" policy she came out with earlier this year is enough reason to start looking behind "the curtain." Is Barrow County located in the United States or North Korea? I implore those fantastic Barrow educators I know to show their students American freedom and justice in action by standing up and speaking out for what you KNOW is RIGHT. What are we teaching our children if we talk American values and freedom, yet practice complacency and silence when those values and freedoms are violated? Barrow County children AND employees AND residents deserve the best possible education system we can offer; the Creel Administration is not it.

Mike Buffington, any news of her 2-year contract extension???
A little background....What is a Charter System?
A charter system is a local school district that operates under the terms of a charter between the State Board of Education and the local school district. The system receives flexibility from certain state rules and regulations in exchange for greater accountability. There is an emphasis on school based leadership and decision-making.
What type decisions do the School Governance Teams make?
"The local teams will make meaningful decisions that will impact the education of children in our community. Decisions will include budget and staffing for local schools."You can find the Barrow County School Governance By-Laws here:

A few questions to ponder:
1. School Governance Teams are to include the principal, 2 teachers, 2 parents, 2 business partners/community members, and 1 student. The assistant principal serves as ex-officio. Of all the SGTs I've seen or heard of, not one has had a student representative. I do believe it is optional at the elementary setting, though. If they did serve, what part would the student play in the decision-making/interviewing process of personnel or would they?
2. If a school is losing a principal, wouldn't it seem appropo that the leaving principal have a say in who will be succeeding her/him? Or at least some kind of input? I assume since no principals that I know of served on the SGT interviewing committees, that it is considered a conflict of interest, but that seems a bit oxymoronic. So essentially, a principal cannot recommend or promote their own assistant principal--right hand woman or man--to take the reigns of the school even if they know this is best for the faculty, staff, students, and parents. "Hands are tied." Who would know what is best for the school besides the principal? Certainly not someone who makes a presence in a building no more than 3 times a year. Teachers should be next on the list of knowing what their school needs. I know for a fact that one of the elementary schools knew exactly what they needed--they are professional, intelligent adults after all--and their recommendation of moving the assistant principal up was squashed. Instead, an unknown candidate was recommended to the board. The team's voice was never heard. Interestingly enough, that assistant principal was sent to be principal across the county at a completely different school for unknown reasons. So, for the person that mentioned in an earlier post that said the interviewing teams met over a course of 5 days and even on a weekend, it sounds like that was a lot of wasted time when the decisions had already been ultimately made. What purpose the SGT then?
To reiterate the statement quoted by "From outside the bubble"--#19.2 above--

What will you be doing Tuesday morning?
The SDOE and SBOE may be interested in Creel not following the requirements of the Charter since our own boe will not stand for what is right.
SACS contact: Mr. Paul Reviere (404) 679-4500
Every concerned citizen should call Mr. Reviere.
There are quotas for white students they must fill and sometimes (sadly) it is hard for them to fill. I say this in all seriousness. Many spots particularly are easily filled by Asian and Indian subcultures.
I address this issue in an editorial this week.
Duh.
This site is entertaining in a low-end, tawdry sort of way. But, only the totally misinformed would ever consider these rants as anything real or useful.
You are confusing law with Charter guidelines and propoganda. Technically you are correct about the superintendent's authority. But it is Creel that is touting parental and community support and telling the BOE that the principals were the SGT's choice. Not true. Why isn't she honest and take ownership of what IS her decision. Is that called politics or lying? And I do know what I am talking about.
Any news on her 2-year contract extension?
Just maybe if people felt comfortable coming forward with their name being used they might.
We get a lot of reports on issues like this and very often it turns out that in these kinds of meetings, people hear just what they want to hear and tune out the rest. I've seen that happen many times with public agencies in meetings. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that something similar happened in these SGT meetings where there was discussion about multiple candidates and the final decision was a rather vague consensus and not a real vote. Misunderstandings often happen that way.
The superintendent gives a very detailed outline in tonight's paper about how that process took place. The groups apparently met together in a very short time frame (over a few days) to get to the recommendations. The pace of that process and the blending of SGT teams in the process might well have led to some misunderstandings.
What's troubling here is that people are alleging the superintendent actually lied to the BOE, yet they offer no evidence of that and they make those allegations from behind a veil. It could be... stranger things have happened... but I really don't find that very credible in the absence of evidence. Just because someone says that's the case doesn't make it true.
"Creel then met with each governance team the afternoon of the BOE’s May 23 meeting.
“I met with each individual governance team, and they brought forward who they felt like was the right fit for their school, and those were the recommendations I took forward to the board, and those were the recommendations the board has approved,” she said"
County Line teachers, the the County Line SGT did feel that Bresson was the best fit for their school. I don't think there would be as much of an uproar if the superintendent would just be honest and say that she listened to the SGT recommendations, but went with the candidates that she felt were best.
Hey, buddy boy, you are 0 for 2.
I say good job!
What happens when budgets are cut? Jobs are lost. And many teachers are retiring, creating open positions.
