The developer of an affordable-housing apartment complex off Haymon-Morris Road will go before the Barrow County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night to seek support for his company’s application for federal tax credits to build Farmington Hills' second phase. Construction of the first 72 apartments is under way on an 8.82-acre tract. The second phase is for another 72 apartments on an adjacent 7.63 acres.
Also on the 7 p.m. meeting’s agenda:
• An annexation request by Joel Pirkle of Braselton to annex into the city of Winder 1.6 acres of land on three parcels at 764, 768 and 772 City Pond Road to obtain access to the city’s sewer system because of failing septic tanks.
• A request by Wanda McLocklin for a county commitment of $1,342 per year for the next three years to help fund a new program assistant position at the extension office.
• A presentation of the FY2011 audit report.
• A $7,100 budget amendment requested by Probate Judge Tammy Brown to cover the costs of upgraded gun licenses mandated by the Georgia General Assembly. The county already receives $29 of every $30 license fee, and the judge is requesting that the BOC return $7,100 to cover the costs of producing and mailing the licenses.
• The appointment of Valencia Berry Riden of Winder as Barrow County’s representative on the Board of Advantage Behavioral Health Systems, which provides services to residents with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and addictions.
• The approval of a $37,000 contract starting July 1 for the services of a work crew from the Phillips State Prison.
• A tap fee collection update by Mark Whiddon.
• The approval of a Local Point of Distribution Plan for the distribution of supplies such as water, ice and tarps during a public emergency.
• The appointment of a District 3 representative to the Barrow County Board of Appeals.
• A $50,000 budget amendment request by Sheriff Jud Smith to cover the cost of overtime for detention officers. Employees are working overtime because the jail currently has 10 vacancies, according to the meeting packet.
The owner of private property has the right to sell it for the highest and best dollar.
High rents force young people out to places like Athens, or further away to more inviting places outside the state.
Won't increase tax base just increase the demand for services...
