Winder pays Eberhart legal fee

With no public comment, the Winder City Council voted Tuesday night to pay $1,300 for the private attorney that councilman Charlie Eberhart hired to defend his ability to vote and to hold office in Winder. Eberhart, who claims his funeral home on King Street as his domicile, was forced to hire an attorney when his political challenger, James Cooley, pursued not only an appeal to the Barrow County Board of Elections, but also to the Barrow County Superior Court. The council’s vote was 5-0-1, after Eberhart left the council chambers during the vote.

Not true on both counts. A JURY said he was NOT GUILTY. Not "the court" and not "innocent."

Joe: What does that have to do with the city using taxpayer funds (taken under the threat of a gun) to pay Eberhart's legal fees? I agree that's how it's done in Winder and Barrow County but that certainly doesn't make it right.

Charlie has been on the council for 20 years, they should pay to defend him against bs challenges.

But the charge wasn't BS. He lives in Winder about as much as I live in Hawaii. Hard to fight city hall and the Winder Good Old Boy Network. This case proved that. The fact that the person who brought the suit is a little different doesn't mean he was wrong. He was RIGHT. Covered up though at the highest level because the council likes having a quiet member of the black community on the board, not someone who makes a lot of noise. Have you ever been to a council meeting? Eberhart does NOTHING. He just sits there. Never says one word. Never objects to anything. Nothing more than a "Yes Man."

Eberhart has a free pass. The last thing Maynard and city counsel want is for Jesse Jackson to come to town.

I see charlie's truck their 7 days a week, and at chuch in winder. He is part of the winder community and a good council member
