The cost of school lunches will increase by at least 25 cents next year in the Barrow County School System. The change is due to new school nutrition guidelines that school systems must meet by 2012-13 set forth by the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act, which passed in 2010. Now, student meal prices must equal federal reimbursement funds for free meals. In Barrow County, 57 percent of students are approved for free and reduced meals.
The system expects an average increased revenue of $14,450 from the proposed meal increases, which would jump in elementary schools from $1.25 to $1.50; in middle schools from $1.50 to $1.75; and in high schools from $1.75 to $2.

This is not a program intended to generate extra revenue for the school system.
