Barrow County’s renovation of the historic courthouse complex in downtown Winder could begin as early as May. A committee on Tuesday interviewed the two bidders. Representatives of John W. Spratlin & Son LLC, which has renovated historic courthouses in three other Georgia counties, said they could start work in May or June. That company bid $4,548,000 to renovate the courthouse, adjacent annex and former detention center.
The other bid was by Sunbelt Builders Inc. for $4,495,000. That company has been involved in two newer county projects. It built the new Barrow County Animal Control Facility a couple of years ago and also finished up the Barrow County Emergency Services project off Pleasant Hill Church Road.
Operations development manager Robert Hohe asked the commissioners and staff on the committee to let him know their preferences by Thursday morning. The committee’s choice will be recommended to the Barrow County Board of Commissioners on May 8.

After all, the tax and spend it all BOC needs more money, they can just raise taxes again and take it from you...
Vote out the GOB (Not GOP) party. They have been parting on your money far too long.
To #2 - the courthouse renovation is being paid by previous year's SPLOST - while narrow banding could be paid by 2012 SPLOST - but those funds have been obligated to buy sheriff vehicles and ambulances.
To #3 - was your name on the ballot? If not, quit yer bitchin! And, by the way, the ones that were elected were, for the most part, a lot better than their opposition.
The County had to Taxed and Spent money to move out of the downtown Winder Court house.
Now they want to spend even more to renovate it, Why?
Tax and Spend Everything...
Downtown Winder choked with traffic
Tax and Spend Everything...
No Sewer / Water Treatment
Tax and Spend Everything...
Major businesses (Toyota and Caterpillar) don't even bother looking at Barrow
Why, the lack of renovated court house's ...
NO
Maybe the county would be better off if this TAX (YOUR) money was spent on its infrastructure rather then putting lip stick on a pig of a project for Yearwood to put is mark on the County
"Yearwood said he also hopes that the renovation of the county’s historic complex in downtown Winder would be finished by the end of this year, which is when his first term in office ends." -> http://www.barrowjournal.com/archives/6659-Outlook-gloomy-in-BOC-chairmans-2012-State-of-the-County-address.html"
Your wrong about the candidates. They aren't any better then the prior ... just different names on the same old GOB (NOT GOP) party types
I agree the low bid is not always the best bid.In fact many municipal jobs could be successfully negotiated but most cities/counties don't know how to even do that.
On this it's hard to tell without looking at the bids.
Let's see which way they go.
Just why are we spending $4.5 million to renovate it? What happens when it's finished?
