Restaurants, stores and music coming to ‘new Winder’

After wooing Carmike Cinemas Inc. to Barrow County, the developers of The Gateway at University Parkway are about to begin construction of their next venture — a 14,000-square foot retail center near the theaters. Gateway Station will feature a sports bar, a pizza restaurant, a music “listening room” for live performances of up-and-coming songwriters, and retail shops. One of the restaurants will be Top Dawg Tavern, a high-end sports bar that will occupy 4,000-5,000 square feet of space, Rich Combs told the newspaper last week.

Combs and his partner, Wayne Bartlett, also are in negotiations with three restaurant chains interested in freestanding sites in front of Gateway Station.

“We’ve got two contracts signed, two with letters of intent, and a fifth one that is doing engineering studies to make sure their building and their parking will fit on the site,” Combs said. “So probably by December, we should have five restaurants. I can’t tell you who they are, but they are family restaurants.”

I am so glad they will be "family" restaurants. Anything to encourage screaming brats,
breast-feeding sows, and hangdog dads (longing for a mistress).

Someone needs to do something with the old Ingle's in Auburn - would make a great spot for a roller skating rink. Our kids need something to do and somewhere to go to socialize - there is nothing out here!

As for Little Italy - maybe he was having a bad day? I love that place and their pizza is the best!! Only had one issue there when they forgot to make my pizza - I got it for free so I don't hold it against them. :)

I wish someone would put up an Ihop or Dennys near Ingles and the hospital. Except for Bojangles nothing on the north side. The old Pet Milk site would be perfect. Winder also needs a good clean up and fix up effort. The whole city looks sooooo run down.

quik trip owns property there through a real estate company they own for secrecy in land buying. they are judging the area market by the success of the store on the oconee connector off 316.

as for a waffle house, they stay out, i refuse to give my buisness to a company who refuses to support my second amendment rights.

The only mention I can find of waffle house and guns says nothing about their stance on the second amendment. Can you be more specific?

look at the outside of any waffle house. there is a sign stating no firearms on the property. when carrying inside a waffle house and they see it, most times they immediatly call law enforcment due to the fact they either are not properly trained in the fact they have to ask you to leave first. OR they're just too dumb to remember all the times they have been told to do so when they call law enforcment and whwn they ask if they said for the party to leave and havent. next time you visit a waffle house, look for the sign and ask them about thier policy. TacoMac has the same sign/policy. what they dont understand however, is that their sign has no legal standing when concering firearms. you can poat whatever sign you like and i can carry my gun there legally up to the point im asked to leave and refuse to do so. at which point is a simple case of criminal trespass and nothing more. no firearms laws broken.

so, while they reufuse to honor my 2nd admendment right by rufusing me to legally carry my fire arm on their property, i refuse to give them my money.

waffle house does however overlook the policy for law enforcment of course.

I don't know the circumstances of the ban, so I can't comment on it. All I've found are mentions of the sign on various gun forums.

Are you sure it's corporate policy and not individual stores? Waffle House might have limited control over it if franchises are independently owned.

Corporate policy. They have stated they do not agree with citizens arming themselves. That statement was made after that string of WH robberies a few years ago. Although they have always had the policy. But they fail to realize a legal armed citizen whos only concern is protecting himself may have prevented the robberies. A buisness clearly stating to the public they do not allow guns instantly tells a criminal they will have the only gun and there is not great to them, thus making it a major criminal target. Yet another reason to stay out of waffle house.

The state of Georgia has a law that allows property owners the right to decide if they allow firearms. In this case, the rights of property owners supercedes that of gun owners.

true. GA gives property owners the right to decide to allow weapons or not. i still have the right to not allow myself to give them my money. again though, property owners that choose not to allow lawful weapon carriers fail to realize if i choose to carry my weapon on their property anyway, by GA law i am in no way commiting a crime untill they ask me to leave and i fail to do so. at which point i am still voilating no firearms laws.

nope. guns and shooting are just a hobby. there are gun owners and carriers out there that care enough to know each and every gun law and what companies that do not care about our views.

I contacted the QT Corporation(QuikTrip) to try to have them consider new locations in the Greater Winder area. Specifically, the GA211NW Corridor, the South Winder are around what is now Barrow Crossing(GA 81 & 316) and along the US29 BUS Route. QuikTrip studies alot and plans sometime years in advance. We will see one at the 81/316 area eventually and maybe others. I shop at QT ONLY, it is superior to all other fuel stops (unless I use Ingles or Kroger when I shop)
Waffle House maybe considering Bethlehem area of GA 11 & 316 but this is rumor at this time. But WH's pop up like bugs eventually so there will be more.
I think IF WH has anti-second amendment policies I will view them differently going forward, because I packed and they never knew for years, they should ask me to leave first, NOT call the police without cause first.

Last, I agree we need an IHOP in Winder!

it shouldnt be long before QT hits winder. they do own property at 316\81. its owned under a real estate company they own. only the owner of QT and about 8 employees know the name of it. they are the best. they know it. when expanding into a new market, they buy in secrecy so the copetition doesnt know untill its too late. there will also be 3 more stores in the athens area. i could tell you much about QT, but it could get loved ones fired.

Jeff Thoene, corporate director of real estate at QuikTrip, is located in corporate hq in Tulsa.

Kroger is coming as well as Longhorn. Haven't heard anything lately about QT. I imagine we will soon. That will end the $.20 markup on gas at the Shell's on either side of 316.

Kroger? I heard theyre getting a Cub Foods down on the end; also there is word that Stars N' Strikes has been eyeing the area.
