Zoning request approved for new Dollar General Market in Statham

Plans for a new Dollar General store were set Tuesday night when Statham City Council agreed to the rezoning of more than three acres at the intersection of Highway 8 and Highway 211. The site will be used for a new 20,700 square-foot store. The store will be11,000 square feet larger than standard Dollar General stores and will sell more grocery items, including frozen foods, dairy items and meats.

Plans are to open the new store before the end of 2012, City Clerk Susan Gabriel said. Once the new store opens, the existing Dollar General on Atlanta Highway will close.

Seriously? How many Dollar General stores do we need in Barrow County??

I have to agree..I like Dollar General,but we have plenty in Barrow.

Yes, Barrow county is saturated with 'Dollar Stores' Everything in them is a waste of money anyway. What do you need to buy from a dollar store? Nothing. Its just a store made to empty whats left over in your wallet, cheap products or overpriced name brands. Barrow County needs to approve business applications only to those that will benefit the area's growth. So many people in Barrow county have gotten used to 'grazing' the aisles looking for something to spend their last 3 dollars on. The people running the county are completely near-sited when it comes to their decision making. Yes a dollar store will provide some tax money to the county, as well as local utility revenues. There has to be more taken into consideration in every thing that comes through their offices.

You don't subscribe to the capitalist system, do you? It's Dollar General's business how many stores they open and what they sell, as long as they adhere to the law. Frankly, you sound like damn communist.

It's funny how the same people who call Obama a "socialist" are the first to cry for government regulation when it's something they don't like. Typical NIMBY hypocrisy. And, yes, calling it "land-use" is mere euphemism for government control of private enterprise. Don't like Dollar General's merchandise? Shop elsewhere. That's I do. I've never set foot in one.

I've never called Obama socialist and prefer limited government when reasonable. Speak to people as individuals and you'll avoid mistakes like that.

Anarchy isn't the solution to occasional government overreach. I don't think Dollar General is a problem in itself, but the discount retail industry should consider the broader socioeconomic consequences to the way it does business.

Even the oil industry tries to develop standards for the protection of the environment and its personnel.

maybe regulate so those type of people dont get sold houses here, cause you know THOSE people will ruin your peace and quiet, lower YOUR home value.... or maybe it is the fact you sit on your porch drinking Shells beer and dipping bacca, and yelling at the kids in the area that is lowering the values, mind your business not everyone elses

There is a Dollar General Market that just opened in the Homewood Hills shopping mall in Athens. It is nice, clean, and full of great deals.

Glad Statham is going to get a larger Dollar General. We do need one. The Dollar General now stays packed.
Barrow may have too many as some of you are saying but Statham only has one Thank Goodness & we do need a larger one as the old one will be tore down.

I could not agree with you more. I cannot understand why they only have 1 cashier. The line will be down the aile and you would Think that the cashier will call for the other person to come up and help but they don't. Several times I had to go look for the other person in the store most of time in the office and ask them if they could come up and help. I have even went out side where they were smocking to ask them to come help.
