Several Auburn residents told the Auburn City Council last week that the city’s weather alert sirens aren’t loud enough. The residents said that while the sirens can be heard if you are outside, they cannot be heard from inside a house.
Charles Sewell, who lives in Heritage subdivision, said that he has asked people he knows to notify him in the event of an emergency situation because he can’t hear them from his residence.
Carolyn Wade, who lives in Governor’s Ridge subdivision off of Brown Bridge Road, said that if you are outside of her house, you can hear the sirens, but if you are inside, you cannot.
“I have a friend who lives right across the street from it in the second part of Governor’s Ridge, and she can’t hear it inside either.”
But Auburn Police Chief Paul Nadeau defended the sirens this week and said they weren’t designed to warn people inside of a house of bad weather.
“The sirens are outdoor warning sirens,” he said. “That's what they were in place to do. They are not supposed to hear it inside their house."

They aren't designed to warn inside just outside???
Excuse me, if I am outside then I think I am going to know if I need to be taking shelter with bad weather coming.
It is 3:00 a.m. when I am asleep that I would like something other than my roof blowing off to let me know a tornado is coming.
Come on people, think before you speak sometimes....
Anonymous - that was probably the most idiotic post I have read in a while. Way to go. (rolling eyes)
Please do some research before lambasting others.
Here is an excerpt from The National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/dvn/?n=sirenfaq
1.What should I do when I hear the sirens?
When the sirens are heard, go inside and
tune to local media to get more
information.
2.Why can’t I hear the sirens in my house?
Sirens are an outdoor warning system
designed only to alert those who are
outside that something dangerous is
approaching.
3.How can I get alerts when I’m at work or in
my house?
For alerts indoors, every home and
business should have a NOAA Weather Radio
All-Hazards. NOAA Weather Radio is like a
smoke detector for severe weather, and it
can wake you up when a warning is issued
for your area so you can take appropriate
action.
Thanks!
