The Auburn City Council unanimously approved a rezoning of 11 acres for a new apartment complex last week, but the action was not without some controversy. Two Auburn residents spoke against the rezoning of a proposed rental development on Mount Moriah Road during a public hearing held Thursday. They were concerned about the possibility of public transportation in the City of Auburn to serve the complex.
During citizen comments, resident John Nelms said that: “(My) primary reason for objecting to the rezoning was not so much the apartments, but it seems like everything I’ve read, heard was going to require the trolley system or transportation system and I’m completely against that."
Resident Harold Hawthorne echoed Nelms’ comments.
“I’m not in favor of that and I don’t think the town’s big enough,” he said. “I don’t think the people need it. And they can ride a bicycle.”
