Authorities arrested a man after victims said he pointed a gun at them on Ga. Highway 316, although the man says he only showed them a badge.
Either way, Jeffrey Craig Hatcher, 48, of 433 Aberdeen Way, Winder, is charged with six felonies, including two counts of impersonating an officer.
According to a Barrow County Sheriff’s Office incident report, a sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to the area eastbound near Patrick Mill Road after receiving a report of road rage involving a firearm.
Both cars were on the highway in the turning lane to Loganville Highway near Chick-fil-A. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle, a black Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Hatcher, in the parking lot of the restaurant. The other vehicle was a white Chevrolet Monte Carlo, the report states.
Hatcher told police he did have a firearm in the center console of the Tahoe and agreed to let the deputy search the vehicle in order to secure the weapon, a Smith & Wesson 38 Revolver, according to the report.
Hatcher said he worked for G4S Security Company and was required to carry a firearm as part of his job. He said he tried to pass a white Monte Carlo with two teenagers in it, but they would not let him pass. He said he was finally able to pass them, the report states, but he denied showing them his gun.
The two complainants, both males, apparently were talking with another deputy, and said that Hatcher pulled out a chrome revolver and pointed it at them. That deputy then read Hatcher his Miranda rights and asked him if he wanted to continue speaking about the incident. He said yes and continued to deny showing or pointing the firearm at the two males.
Hatcher was arrested and placed in a patrol car while the complainants filled out witness statement forms. A wrecker was called to remove Hatcher’s vehicle from the scene. He was taken to the Barrow County jail.
While en route to be booked, one deputy asked him if he understood why he was being taken to jail. "When you show people a badge they automatically assume you have a gun,” Hatcher said, referring to a Gold G4S Badge, according to the report.
The firearm and bullets were taken into evidence, as well as the gold colored G4S badge.
Hatcher is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of terroristic threats and acts, and two counts of impersonating a peace officer, the report states.
