Fire backup radio back in service

Barrow County Emergency Services chief Dennis Merrifield last week put the backup radio he had been using for another purpose back into service for fire communications. The timing was good because the main base station for fire communications failed the following day and was out of commission for four hours.

But according to audio recordings obtained by the Barrow Journal through an open-records request, the fire backup radio itself had technical difficulties during the communications breakdown on March 28. It initially did not work with the city fire department’s pagers and radios. And even after that problem was worked out, the unit did not communicate well with Barrow County’s stations.
