If the corporate office of CSX Transportation Inc. did cancel this week’s planned repairs to two of its busiest railroad crossings in Winder, it forgot to tell its crews scheduled to do the work.
Lt. Rob Curott, the Winder Police Department's operations commander, said last week that he had received a call from CSX telling him that the Broad Street crossing would be closed for repairs on Monday, April 2, and the crossing at Horton Street would close on Wednesday, April 4. He asked the Barrow Journal to help publicize the planned closings of the two busy crossings.
But when asked how long the work would take, CSX spokesman Gary Sease then told the Barrow Journal that the work had been postponed indefinitely.
However, CSX workers showed up this morning after all and closed the crossing at Broad and May streets.
Because of the mixed messages from CSX, Winder police chief Dennis Dorsey and his department did prepare. They posted a few warning signs, placed barriers nearby, and told a handful of officers to be ready to direct traffic if they were needed. Those officers currently are directing traffic at Athens and Broad streets; at Athens and Center streets; at Athens and Horton streets; and at May and Center streets.
The chief said he and Curott drove around checking traffic flow just before noon.
"It’s flowing decent," Dorsey said. "Sure, there are interruptions and backups because we’re having to re-route traffic. But it’s probably going as good as it can be right now. The officers are doing a great job.”
Although CSX likely is planning, as originally intended, to close the Horton Street crossing on Wednesday, Dorsey said he hopes the Broad Street crossing re-opens by then.
“They couldn't close both of them because we would have nowhere to send the trucks,” he said.
Never seen anyone that bad!
This officer shouldn't even be directing traffic in the middle of a ONE WAY street.
Today IS the 2nd
Remember this when England is up for re-election
Maybe he was just doing what he was TOLD and was never gotten READY.
I'm not a cop or a family member of a cop, however, I did not want to be out there doint what they were today. Even the Chief was out directing...did a pretty good job too. Anyway, I think they did the best they could with the traffic situation around Winder. Remember, the Engineers with the Ga. Department of Transportation are the biggest, dumbest and most ignorant people ever worked for a state. Anyone who designed something like they did at Horton and Athens should be arrested and put in jail for stupidity.
Try going to Hill's and then getting out and making a right toward town. I use to be that you only had to get out into one lane of traffic and most of the time, someone was nice enough to let you in...now, you have to cross the turn lane if someone lets you in and hope you don't get nailed in the second lane going toward town. I sat there a few days ago before all the railroad crossing mess and it took several miuntes to get out. Yeah, brilliant GDOT engineers.
You won't have those drivers swerving into the right turn lane at 45 MPH without giving a signal.
Really Barrow Journal, really, NOW after all this time, "Id@it" will get my relevant to that comment message not posted??
What about YOU not using Beulah St? --Or would you both just perfer we CLOSE IT (as one of you super brains said). What about Pruitt Oil or the Furnature Trucks, the Pallet maker Trucks?
Yes, it will benefit Winder if we FURTHER CLOG the other Streets to save Beulah Street!! This is why we DIDNT elect you to any office.
I say YOU stay off Beulah Street.
