WBHS named 'Focus School' by DOE

The state’s new system replaces the federal government’s No Child Left Behind requirements. Georgia was one of 10 states to win a waiver in February from the No Child Left Behind laws. Under the new requirements, WBHS will receive state support and interventions starting in June 2012 and will be served for three years.

WBHS's graduation rate for the past two years has been in 71.6 percent in 2010 and in 76.4 percent in 2011 – with an overall gain of almost 5 percent in one year, Barrow County School System superintendent Wanda Creel said Wednesday.

The placement on the list was due to the gap between the number of white students graduating and the number of students with disabilities graduating.

The school's overall graduation rate, however, is well above the 60 percent threshold.

Another category under the new waiver requirements is appropriated for Title I and non-TItle I schools. That designation is for schools classified as Alert schools.
