BOC to consider schedule change

The Barrow County Board of Commissioners may soon meet once, instead of twice, each month.

This Tuesday, Chairman Doug Garrison will ask the board to amend the current meeting schedule. The county charter requires the board to meet at least monthly on the second Tuesday of the month and to call additional meetings as necessary. Garrison will ask the commissioners to eliminate the standing additional meeting currently held the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Other items on this month’s agenda include the review and adoption of the county’s watershed protection plan, a purchase request for a high pressure jet trailer in the wastewater services budget and a review of pay grade changes for several county positions.

The Barrow County Board of Commissioners will meet at 7 p.m. on August 12 at the Barrow County Administration building, located at 233 East Broad Street in Winder.

With the Chairman and two commissioners now lame ducks it should be no surprise they want to cut the number of meetings in half. The tax payers of Barrow County better keep a close eye on what the current officials do between now and Dec.31st even though they will be meeting half as often.

I'm not sure we should let this slide without a fight.
One meeting each month means twice as much business per meeting, but the period for public comments remains at 10 minutes. This essentially cuts our speaking time in half.
Is 10 minutes, once a month, sufficient? There were times when ten minutes, TWICE a month, was not enough...

The current 10 minutes of public comment per meeting was twice as much as the current officials wanted to hear so this way they can cut it in half by having only one meeting per month. Why not ask them to allow 20 minutes if they go to one meeting per month. The good news is that this way, three of the current commissioners will have only 4 more meetings to attend.
