Government is a necessary evil
Friday, March 9. 2012
I’m often accused of being critical of government. Guilty. While we cannot exist without government, it has gotten too big, too expensive and too self-serving at all levels. Government produces very little, yet today consumes a huge percentage of our economy. Government does not create any wealth — the private sector creates wealth by taking raw products (both physical and intellectual) and transforms that into something people will buy. The government is a leech off of that system sucking money out of the pockets of those who produce in society.
And government is too often a playground for egos and insider deals. Something happens to many of those elected to public office. No matter how astute they are in their private business, government leaders often make the dumbest decisions while in office. It’s like a mass psychological plague takes over; people who would never spend their own money on some hairbrained scheme are all too willing to spend taxpayer money.
Here are just a few examples of what I’m talking about:
• A story this week showed just how dumb Gwinnett County leaders were in spending millions of tax dollars to build a minor league baseball stadium a few years ago. Gwinnett leaders sold the plan by saying the stadium would be an economic development draw for the county. Now, the plan is falling apart. A key part of the overall development deal was to be a bunch of connected commercial development. But now the county is looking to allow a slew of apartments instead. The project is already struggling since the county hasn’t generated the revenue it promised from the deal. Of course, the Gwinnett County government and local developers have long been married at the hip in that community and the county government has been just an extension of the development community’s insider dealings. But it’s the average Gwinnett taxpayer who’s getting his pocket picked for that government’s mistakes. To think that a minor league ballpark would be an engine of development was just typical Gwinnett leaders’ ego.
• The Jackson County government recently amended a 2007 policy concerning what happens if bad weather closes the county government. If the county is closed for bad weather, county employees will get paid anyway. Under a 2004 policy, employees had to take the missed time as a paid vacation or personal day. The 2007 and now amended 2012 policy is insane. Things happen. Sometimes bad weather closes down businesses, too, but employees don’t get paid for that day. If a farmer can’t work in his field because of bad weather, he doesn’t get compensated. If a restaurant is closed because of bad weather, waitresses don’t get paid. I don’t know of any business that pays people to stay home during bad weather. But government does because it’s not their money being spent. And why have a policy like that when the Jackson County government is imposing furlough days anyway? It doesn’t make sense to get paid to stay home in bad weather.
• The state continues to shift more of the cost of education to the local governments. Starting next year, for example, local systems will have to pay a larger share of the insurance cost for bus drivers and other non-certified school personnel. It’s a shell game being played by the state to lower its costs by moving more expenses to local governments. But the local governments get that money from the local taxpayers, so in the end those paying the bill are still getting hit. In Barrow County, it will cost that school system over $3 million in local dollars in the coming years. And anyway, where in the private sector do part-time employees get insurance benefits? Very few private sector businesses offer benefits for part-time workers, but it’s common in the public sector and not just with bus drivers. Many city councils and county commissions also offer their board members fat insurance plans for what is a part-time job.
• Back in Gwinnett County, local towns are happy that their police forces can again use radar after a political dispute with the county took that away a year ago. They’re happy not for reasons of public safety — the lack of radar use didn’t cause any more wrecks in Gwinnett according to published reports — no, they’re happy because now those towns can again use radar as a way to raise money for city governments. Traffic enforcement is supposed to be for safety reasons; but in reality, most traffic enforcement by small towns is for the money. High fines for minor traffic violations are the norm and city governments often pressure their police forces to raise more and more fine income. It eventually falls apart because towns can’t generate enough fine income to offset the cost of the officers (ask the towns of Hoschton, Pendergrass and Arcade about that.) But it is disingenuous for a local city government to use its police department as a source of income while giving wink-wink lip service to “public safety.” It’s just putting men with guns on the road to stop drivers and extort money from them. It isn’t right and it degrades public trust in both law enforcement and government in general.
• The City of Jefferson recently had a day-long retreat to discuss city issues and plans for the future. Among the items discussed was the question what, if anything, should the city do about people riding golf carts on the streets in a couple of large subdivisions. Apparently, kids like to ride the golf carts to the neighborhood pool in the summer. But there are those in these neighborhoods who are having a fit about it; how dare kids ride a golf cart on the subdivision streets! So city fathers spent an hour discussing the issue. Who cares, except for a few meddling neighbors who have nothing really important to think about? Nobody’s been hurt on a golf cart that I’m aware of — and the large golf carts are safer than kids riding bikes on those same subdivision streets. What a waste of a government’s time.
Yes, I am a critic of many governments. Some individual government officials try to do the right thing, but many governments have become little more than playgrounds for the connected.
And there are too many governments — too many small towns that collect tax money and pay a staff, but return little in the way of needed services to their citizens. Even mostly good governments waste a lot of tax money with inefficiency, duplicated services and inane projects driven by the ego of elected officials who wants their name on the door of a building.
Government is a necessary evil in our society. Somebody has to pave roads and provide law enforcement. Somebody has to provide education and other services. If everyone did what they should do in life, we wouldn’t need much government.
But too many people have elevated government to the status of “the great problem solver” and turn to it to fix all of life’s issues. It cannot, and should not, try to do that.
We need government, but we also need to remember it is not the solution to all our problems.

I have found and brought to the attention employees that don't so their jobs. One has taken almost 6 months to possibly resolve the others was swept under the rug.
This County doesn't want citizen watchdogs. And if you think you can file a CONFIDENTIAL complaint with The Sheriff you can't. He doesn't believe in confidentialty if his citizens. Now I am no longer a concerned citizen/taxpayer I am a trouble maker. However, if my complaints were confidentialty, as asked, no one would know who complaint but they would know people were watching to make sure their job was being done. Such a joke!
From what I've seen of the county, It's all too fast to take sides in the complaints of the connected at the expense of the county.
Its costing the county more then the tax dollars spent... The economy maybe turning, but Business is not even looking at Barrow because the BOC is in the paper what seems like every week in some fight between themselves or on the behalf of the connected.
Ronald Reagan said it best "Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives"
If neighbors can't live together then let them have at in the courts on their OWN dime.
Done!!!!!!! we have state employees NOT doing their jobs but yet still have one! Showing up late everyday and sitting on their butts all day doing NOTHING is wasting my tax dollars! You apparently don't know what you are talking about!
They are just checking a govt box so later the can SAY they were open to the Public, TRUTH: They DO NOT Really want to Hear It.
They Can't Handle the Public Opinion, the Sheriff or Police Depts or Commissioners or Councils often DISMISS YOU if You don't agree with Their Plan, Actions or Spending of Taxpayer Funds.
This County although they say they welcome and appreciate "watch dogs" discourage it.
I think government employees forget ... The money although it appears free comes from taxpayers.
I'm horribly disappointed in the County Commissioners, PDC, Sheriff ... Almost every agency in this county. And TRUST me if our Commissioners didn't encourage starter houses and discouraged any good growth, I might actually be able to sell my house and go somewhere less corrupt and protected by some Winder insider code.
I'm obviously not originally from this county if I were I do believe things would be handled differently.
BTW why isn't your real name on your responses .. You seem to be reaping the benefits on confidentiality.
"Actually you are correct, the Winder PD did WASTE MONEY on Re-Striping one of their newer police vehicles, the "oldest" Tahoe (1st of the 3) other than the two new ones. So they did WASTE Taxpayer/Citizen fund for VANITY sake, "so they matched" (I call BS myself).
I cant wait til they want to WASTE more of our money to re-do them all, appearantly they have all the officers and other equipment they need already, so they have extra taxpayer money sitting around for stuff like this.
Since they have all the money and extra to burn, I want to see my CITY BILLS REDUCED this year, since they have money to burn at WPD."
AND
"The image of our department sucks because they think new decals will fix the problems, it only wastes our money and makes them feel good like they did something, but that was only to make them feel better, the real image problem isnt the cars, its the people and attitude who work there, thats it problem that wasting taxpayer monry on stickers wont fix, the "blue line" at WPD has us the people on the other side. They dont get it and seems they will never get it."
(BOTH ARE PRIOR COMMENTS BY OTHERS, BUT..)
So what about these things? WHY does the Govt, in this case one of the Police Depts, actaully City Govts, feel they can justify spending on stuff like this and Expect us not TO GET MAD??!
I see above where Winder PD wasting money, Obama is Wasting money, the DOT does "highway robbery on I-85" to get your money, and Very Few seem to Care,
But I say BAD BREEDS BAD, So?? So, they get away with the WASTE, and GET USED TO IT, and then DO IT MORE, then again and again... If it goes UNCHECKED.
Winder PD will spend more on decals for 20+ plus cars because the Citizens of Winder probably don't give a crap?? America doesn't seem to give a crap that Pelosi & Obama spent Trillions (billions in a fake stimulus too). It is easy for Govt to Abuse Us Fiscally if we allow it without saying anything. They take it as our Approval.
Golf carts are motorized vehichles. It is illegal to operate ANY motorized vehicle on public roadways without a license. It is also illegal to operate ANY motorized vehicle on public roadways that have not been approved for use on public roadways. It is also illegal to operate ANY motorized vehicle on public roadways that do not have a valid and current license plate and does not have state required motor vehicle insurance.
Regardless of anyone being hurt YET or not, it is against the law to operate golf carts on public roadways UNLESS the local governing authority has laws in effect that provides for the use of those types of vehicles on the public roadway.
In simple terms, it is against the law for kids or anyone else to have GOLF carts on the road. GOLF carts are designed and intended for the GOLF COURSE. Not public roadways.
Apparently you don't think that people should obey the law unless it suits you for them to do so. I guess YOU get to decide which laws "we" should obey and which ones we should ignore.
You should think about the example you are setting, Mike, before you post your editorials.
The Police wont let you be unknown about 90% of time, but in this case I am not accussing another of a crime, if they ride up they can difuse without need of complainant in some cases(but they usually wont).
If you call 911 on neighbors who are having a very loud party at 3 AM, and the police come out -- It's not so much who called the police because they could say they were patrolling and heard the noise, which is what they have done every time I called on the party crowd. It could be any neighbor unless of course you are the ONLY one not invited.
The busy body trouble makers aren't the one's calling the police at 3 AM because you are having a loud party; they are the one's who complain about your home, cars, children, yard, and pets. They are the one's checking your taxes, property assessment, building permits, and doing Google earth images to see what's on your property in your back yard, hidden behind that fence or row of trees.
Those are the one's who don't want to be identified because they want what you have, but don't feel like working for it.
If their complaints have merit then they should not need to hide...
If their complaints don't have merit then They should be known for Who they are and What they are...
The problem with the golfcarts on sub-didvison streets is due to the way the humand mind works. Your kids(obviously) get used to driving down to the pool everyday, no problem but then one day little mikey decides he wants a coke and a pack of crakers, the store is just down the road , maybe even closer to the pool than your house is so off he goes down the road on the highway. When that golfcart gets hit by a 2000 pound car going 60 mph little mikey is not going to fare too well.
Keep your kids off of the streets mike in your fancy golfcart and teach them some respect for the law.
With YOUR logic, I guess it is okay to drive your car at 100 miles per hour, regardless of the speed limit...if its only on a little back road that has very few people on it.
I guess its okay to steal a few thousand dollars from a megabank, since they have so much money and they are abusing their customers.
I guess its okay to take a couple of two-by-fours from the construction site when you need a few and don't want to spend the money, since they have several truck loads just laying there.
I guess its okay to sneak into the USA as an illegal alien, because you don't want to go through the trouble of doing the paperwork and dealing with the government (you know...doing it LEGALLY instead of ILLEGALLY?).
If you don't like the law, get it CHANGED. Don't BREAK the law just because "its just a subdivision".
As I said before, they are breaking the law. And if you let one person break the law, regardless of what it is, then how can you complain when anyone else breaks a law? Oh, lets just break this one because its easier to do that than obey the law...and then its easier to break the next one, and the next one, and the next one, until, well, why bother with ANY of the laws.
You know VERY well that is a slippery slope and we just can NOT go down it.
Its the LAW and they are BREAKING IT. Be a good citizen and stop telling everyone that is okay to break a law that you don't think is important.
BUT you miss the point, golf-carts in Most Jurisdictions are NOT LEGAL for street use by State Law, you can read Title 40 if you want too. (in a few exceptions, some places require TAGS for golfcarts in those places now, it was newly created law too..) This is a Public Saftey issue, not who owns the street. State determines road worthy vehicles.
The only chance we have to preserve American values and way of life is to vote Obama out in 2012. I believe that Conservatives in this country have had enough, and are ready to take back America in 2012...... Vote Republican and start making a difference........
Sincerely,
DuWayne Anderson
Member, Barrow County Republican Party
Do you not realize that people think you're off your rocker and are either looking at you with digust or just laughing mockingly at you?
Most people would realize how that makes them look and would stop embarrasing themselves like that.
Are YOU smart enough to learn a lesson? Doubtful. I imagine you will just keep spewing forth your worthless trash and continue to make yourself look foolish, and embarrass the Republican Party by insisting on proclaiming your membership.
So too should any and all means be taken to expose the local yearwood administration as the destructive force it has become. If its too much politics for you sir then maybe you should read something else until November, your friend Jack Legg.
You, "sir", should realize that political discussion in an otherwise NON-political thread is inappropriate.
But I suppose that your I.Q. isn't high enough to realize that, is it?
This editorial had NOTHING TO DO WITH politics until your "dumb and dumber" buddy tried to hi-jack it with his rambling display of ignorance.
And, of course, YOU had to insist on showing your ignorance and bias, just to kick it along.
So typical. And you wonder why the country is in the mess its in?
Well, look around, genious! Its because of people with your attitudes.
You have no positive contributions to a discussion, with people of your ilk its always about trying to start a mud slinging war. You must really enjoy causing arguments.
Here is a suggestion! How about actually doing something that matters and improves the situation instead of helping some political hack do yet another hatchet job on the truth!
At least your paper isn't in the tank for Obama like the rest of the media. It's embarrassing the free pass this guy gets. Just look at the lack of reporting on gas prices. If this were a republican administration they'd get killed and it's all we'd hear about. Instead we listen to Rush's apology and Fluke's request for more contraception paid by the taxpayer. Ludicrous.
As far as Abortion, I agree that is a dead horse, leave it there, Why does it keep getting brought back up, it is so far down the importance list now.
Cutting Taxes creates opportunities, creates jobs, encourages spending, investment, expansion and actually NETS the GOVT MORE MONEY (but again, this concept is over many persons heads, probably yours too)
What is relevant is the topic and comments related to it. You, based on your comments are a worshipper at the altar of Obama, and yes I would like Change!
I am not the guy above, there is not just a single Liberal and Conservative on duty each day to post here, so maybe read a little closer. (I never said "in the tank"). I did say He OPENLY SUPPORTS Higher Gas prices, He does. That is bad business for the U.S. period. If someone called your second coming POTUS a monkey as you did the other 4, it would never end. Your Political Ad didn't sell me, nothing told me why B.O. is better (in your mind), and you just threw mud on the others... I guess there is no positives to say? (or that's all you know to do)
there eventually came a time to put an end to slavery and I think a time is soon coming to put an end to the slaughter of innocents that is abortion.
Jobs, Economy, Fuel Prices, Healthcare, You name the list, all higher topics, but those hurt Obama...
" the lack of radar use didn’t cause any more wrecks in Gwinnett according to published reports "
It is ALL ABOUT REVENUE, Very Very Little about Public Safety. I hope the GCPD will continue to do more policework and won't give it to the temptation to focus on REVENUE GENERATION as some Departments focus on.
Speeds need to be set at appropriate speeds for SAFE TRAVEL, Not to Create Speed Traps for Revenue Generation. In many places, we can travel efficently and be safe, other places have need for slower travel, but usually its to set-up speed zones more often.
If you tolerate a necessary evil...you will tolerate all manner of evil.
Now you slaves need to quit your sniveling and get back to work....evil needs funding.

Aldi's German operations currently consist of Aldi Nord's 35 individual regional companies with about 2,500 stores in western, northern, and eastern Germany, and Aldi Süd's 31 regional companies with 1,600 stores in western and southern Germany.
Today, there are over 1,000 ALDI stores in 31 states, from Kansas to the East Coast.
So not that it matters, but I thought we would have Correct facts.
The individual groups were originally owned and managed by brothers Karl Albrecht and Theo Albrecht; Karl has since retired and is Germany's richest man. Theo was Germany's second richest man until his death in July 2010
