Man arrested after trying to cash fake check at bank
Friday, March 2. 2012
An apparently homeless man was arrested after he tried to cash a fake check at a bank, according to Braselton police.
Mark Steven Daniel, 54, was charged with first degree forgery after admitting that someone offered him a place to stay and food if he cashed the check at a bank, according to an incident report.
Since 2008, Braselton police have arrested at least five people in similar forgery cases — in which homeless men were taken from Atlanta to Braselton to try to cash fake checks.
In the latest incident, an employee at Wells Fargo on Spout Springs Road said she questioned a check given and signed to her by Daniel that appeared to have incorrect account numbers.
The check was issued by The Alcove, Inc. — a youth shelter in Walton County. An employee at the shelter told Braselton police that the agency didn’t issue the check to Daniel.
Daniel initially told an officer that he worked for The Alcove, which he incorrectly identified as a construction company. He explained that he cleaned the business. Daniel then said he found the check while collecting cans.
Upon further questioning, an officer asked Daniel if someone offered him a place to stay and food in exchange for cashing a check. Daniel looked at the floor and said, “That sounds about right,” police reported.
Daniel was placed under arrest and taken to the Hall County Detention Center.
Other Incidents
Other incidents reported to the Braselton Police Department last week included:
•damage to property at McDonald’s on Spout Springs Road, where a manager said a customer told her that a truck pulling a trailer with landscaping equipment hit a sign at the drive-thru. The customer didn’t get a license plate number and the driver of the truck didn’t stop to report the incident. The manager said the damage resulted in employees being unable to turn a menu portion of the sign. The damage was estimated at $10,000.
•simple assault at a Riverview Parkway address, where a couple had an argument. The woman was sitting in a chair on the front porch and the man was sitting in a car when an officer arrived. Both people said that they were fine and there was no physical contact between them. The couple said the argument focused on the man’s children. Two officers explained that they may need to separate from each other, even for a couple of hours. Neither person wanted to leave the house, but agreed to stay in separate areas of the residence.
•theft by taking at a Pleasant Oak Drive address, where a man said someone stole his Chevy Silverado truck from his driveway. The man said his mother-in-law was the last person to drive the vehicle and she parked it in the driveway. The next morning, the truck was missing. The man said he called his mother-in-law, who said that she didn’t see the vehicle in the driveway when she left that morning. There were no suspects in the incident.
•custody dispute at a Ga. Hwy. 53 address, where a Braselton man said that his ex-wife was supposed to exchange custody of their children at the Braselton Police Department during that time. The man said his ex-wife told him that she wasn’t bringing the children to visit with him. The man asked for an incident report.
•custody dispute at a White Walnut Way address, where a Douglasville man said that the mother of his children refused to let him see their children. The man didn’t have a copy of court papers specifying details of the custody exchange, but the woman did. The woman explained that she doubted the validation of the court papers, which were issued in Florida, and other law enforcement agencies in Georgia. An officer told her that the papers were signed by a judge and she could be held in contempt of court. He suggested that she contact an attorney. The woman allowed the man to take custody of the children.
•custody dispute at Cracker Barrel on Exchange Way, where a Flowery Branch man said he was supposed to exchange custody of his child. The child’s mother didn’t answer her phone and didn’t provide a reason for not coming to the location.
•possession of less than one ounce of marijuana at a Ga. Hwy. 211 location, where a Braselton officer was assisting the Georgia State Patrol with a safety checkpoint. As a trooper was speaking to a potential drunk driver, the Braselton officer approached the passenger side window and noticed the odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. The passenger said he had been smoking the marijuana and he had more hidden in a storage container. The officer found the container, which had a small amount of suspected marijuana. The passenger said that it contained marijuana and a synthetic substance. The passenger was issued a citation and the officer took the contraband as evidence.
