Now that beer and wine is sold on Sundays in Auburn, city leaders are considering if the people want to be able to purchase other types of alcohol within the city limits. The Auburn City Council discussed last week a potential referendum to allow package stores in the town. In November, the citizens of Auburn passed the Sunday sales referendum in a local election. Now, city leaders are working to build the framework for a potential ordinance relating to package stores.
At a Feb. 16 city council meeting, City Planner Larry Lucas suggested some regulations as precautionary methods, including a minimum square footage of 5,000-10,000 for stores, which would eliminate the possibility of package stores setting up shop in “small, hole-in-the-wall” establishments, he said.
Another possible regulation would be tying the number of package stores to the city’s population, such as for every 10,000 residents, only one package store would be allowed, which would provide for greater opportunity for additional locations as the city grows, said Lucas.
Lucas called the suggested “very typical of the type that you see in (other) jurisdictions” to insure particular locations aren’t downgraded by a package store.
Kidding aside, it is so funny that this is such a hot topic in Barrow County. Unfortunaly there is not a lot of self control in areas where there is nothing to do, like in Barrow County.
With Transit system from the Trailor Park to the Liquor Store, I guess it will be a new boom town!
I agree we need a Krispy Kreme or Dunkin, more likely would be in center of county, like Winder but even one of those, in this Economy, probably wont happen. Fell Lucky we have what we have now, Until a CHANGE happens, I hope we can keep what we have in Barrow, much less dream for more. Plus yall all go to Gwinnett to spend anyway, so you fund them getting more stores there instead of here anyway...
You Help Lower Clarke's or Gwinnett's TAXES, They Love You. We will continue to suffer here.
Heck, maybe you should call them and rent it yourself. Surely you have some grand idea ............
In Auburn, the "Old Ingles" was not that old when the corporate office decided to go ahead a built the "New Layout design", so they built the New Auburn store right next door, the other building sits empty and would make a good BigLots or Freds or etc...Ingles would want a "big box" tenant who would and could sustain the facility themselves, not be a "landlord-tenants" situation. --So if you can VOTE in a Change to the Economy (New President) in November, maybe one day the economy may allow a new tenant in that building on day soon.
