The Statham City Council Tuesday night unanimously approved an expenditure of $35,000 to match a $125,000 Department of Transportation grant that will fund the paving of a portion of Jefferson Street adjacent to a new Barrow County middle school.
According to Mayor Robert Bridges, $36,000 of the funds the city commits for the project would come out of the city's SPLOST account.
Bridges had previously written a letter to the Governor, state officials and the DOT asking for that street to be paved after the school is built. The DOT sent the city a letter back indicating the preliminary estimate for the project is $161,000 and offering to commit $125,000.
