The Georgia Department of Transportation just announced a new traffic signal in Winder at the intersection of State Route 211 and McNeal Road. According to a release by Georgia DOT spokesperson Teri Pope, the new signal is flashing in test mode now. If weather permits and testing goes well, the signal will be operational the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 28.
Each intersection is reviewed to determine if the intersection meets the Federal guidelines for the installation of a traffic signal. The intersection of State Route 211 and McNeal Road met those requirements.
“Once the signal is operational, please use extra caution until you get familiar with the new signal location,” said Georgia DOT District Traffic Engineer Brent Cook in a statement. “Remember to watch out for other drivers until they get used to the new signal too.”

Once , I really thought we might get a light out at the intersection near the hospital, just to slow down the flow. But, even that didn't come to fruition.
What really has to happen to get a light considered ? Is it just politics? If so, whose mom lives on McNeal Dr and has complained about traffic getting onto 211?
Both Should Exist. Ask now, 2019 you shall recieve!
I have been going thru the Holly Hill parking lot for years now to Horton St to Avoid the long wait or taking your life in your hands at McNeal & Athens St(Ga 211 NW)...
Lake Drive(FUMC) & the Ingles entrance should be a light, NO QUESTION, hard to pull out at ANY TIME of the day.
The bank property drive should have access to the Ingles lot, Bojangles has access to Lake Dr, there is no debate, But the DOT says NO!!
Signed, someone with GDOT
West Athens St/GA 211 NW & McNeal Road. (Note: GA 211 runs all over Winder)
Thank God. It seems to be a true Miracle from above that had to be involved for the DOT to do anything that actually benefits the residents of Barrow County & Winder. (someone must have told the DOT that fixing this road would help people get "THRU" quicker).
I am actually very thankful to see some of these well overdue upgrades to the safety of our roads, the McNeal Intersection was very dangerous to get out of for decades.
Most of you probably don't even remember the fight over May Street/US29 Bus-GA8, it was a FOUR-LANE ROAD from Akins Ford to the Winder Corners Publix, YES, a 4-LANE road, but the DOT decided that 3-lanes was better, and it shall be, despite us, --and now it takes up to 20-30 minutes to drive that stretch at times, no wonder everyone complains about Winder Traffic!!! (Message: Avoid Winder, don't drive this way, spend money here and help boost our economy and taxes)
How was that good for business? It was NOT. It and many other choices of the DOT have harmed our growth and development. The DOT did a "So called Traffic Study" and determined that no-one was coming to Barrow County, so GA316 was really just a "past-thru" road. (I was told that we exceeded that traffic studies results predictions for the year 2023 about 4 years ago, because it was so far off reality.)
For the Record: The Mayor & Council, entire Board of Commissioners and almost every business along the route SUPPOSEDLY was strongly against it, the manager of K-Mart was strongly that way too.
I was wondering whose %$#* we need to kiss to get any assistance from the DOT.
The West Winder Bypass is another example: Routing Traffic away from us, the plan is to take GA 211 away from Winder entirely, route Braselton/I-85 to GA316. The current existing GA 211 NW will be converted to basically a 2-lane side street, then the new section becomes a big flowing 4-lane to route traffic around(away) Barrow County and around our economy.
Whatever happened to the East Winder Bypass, which included an overpass over the tacks, proposed over 25+ yrs ago?? It was a more beneficial to the local traffic, never got done...
BUT WHY were things allowed to be built in the path anyway? We still could use this East Bypass today.
Some places do get VIP treatment, an intersection in Braselton(in Hall Co), where a light was long asked for got the fast track in a short period, over several requested ones here in Barrow that were asked for in the mid-1980's (McNeal being one of the many). We dont grease the palms of the DOT like other places appearantly, and the DOT is about the money, so an insult means you might not get nothin' for years....
