Jennings says 'no' to chairman run

Barrow County Chamber of Commerce president Tommy Jennings said Tuesday he has decided to not make a run for county commission chairman this year. Jennings had openly been mulling a possible run for the seat. Former Braselton Mayor Pat Graham has announced her intentions to run. Incumbent chairman Danny Yearwood hasn't officially announced his plans.

“After discussions with my family and with my chamber leadership, I feel that although the new chairmanship is labeled a part-time position, there would be a need to devote full-time energies to the job,” said Jennings, the chamber’s president.

Instead, he said he would look forward to working with the next chairman “in growing our businesses, jobs and payrolls.”

Probably a wise decision by Tommy. Besides, he would have to had taken a large paycut if he had gotten elected.

Tommy is a good man. Probably would have made a good chairman, however, in the position he currently holds, I think he can do more good for the county and cities as Chamber Director.

With our new county manager taking position after the first of the year, I would like to see a group meeting of the chamber director, new manager, mayors and a couple representatives of the BOC and BOE along with the industrial development authority, downtown development authority and a few business leaders and discuss the direction for our county. This stagnant, stale holding pattern we are in now is not creating jobs and attracting new businesses to our community. It's time to get off our a$$es and get moving. It's not going to just come to us...too much competition out there. Let's put together a group and steer this county forward.

Our city and county officials could look at lowering utilities, fees, permits, licenses and even tax incentives to attract jobs.

Just a thought, but something has to give.

Good! Jennings would have been nothing more than a good old boy. He is not smart enough for the job. All he is doing now is sucking wind off his dads coat tail.

I agree tommy, a wise choice, you may have beaten yearwood and you may have ran a close race with graham, but tommyboy I would have paddled that little beehind in the election.Looks like all that is left is me and pat to duke it out over a yearwoods political corpse.

you forgot to mention one important point. the role of potential spoiler(s) in the BOC chair race. 2 folks in dist. 2 are contemplating a possible run at the big chair.On top of that, Bill Brown, may decide to change to the big chair race,from D2, and he will have a lot of support from those who have had enough of Yearwood. Also, if Barrow County Republican Party Dist. 2 Representative Anderson decides to run, the votes will be split, and a run-off almost certain. Both Brown and Anderson along with Graham, will garner enough votes to nix anyone winning on the first try. Better brush up on your local politics, before you predict anything, dude the horses for this race are still in the stables, and anything is possible

Brown is unelectable in barrow county due to his past shenannigans when he was a board member, folks are tired of it.If by Anderson you mean goofy.....he cant even win in an anonymouse straw poll if he hadnt been blogging his ignorance over the last 4 years maybe...but he has been...so...he's out.Legg has the best chance against yearwood and zero against Graham.There will be no run-off involving yearwood either , that would imply that half of barrow county voters are drunk on election day...well anythings possible in barrow politics.

you are talking about your opinions and those of your friends that might agree with you. i am talking about the actual votes that will be cast in the race. Brown will get votes, Graham will get votes, yearwood will get votes, and anderson will get votes. Proof you say. simple look at the actual votes cast in the last elections in 2010 BOE races Anderson got over 1,400 votes,finished 2nd against cromer, and was outspent by the 3rd place finisher in that race 2-1. while you don't like that fact, 1400+ votes out of the 5 or 6 thousand votes cast, would be enough to cause a run-off with just anderson in the race win or lose now add Graham,Brown, 2 last minute entries, and yearwood, and you have a runoff if i were wanting to really win the boc chair seat, i think i would be calling brown and anderson to see if i could get them to change their minds about running otherwise you will be emptying your bank account to fund a runoff

Fool us once but not twice. Bill Brown is nothing more than a pawn looking for the government job. If he wins district 2 it will be a miracle. Much less the Chair position. He was part of the reason Danny was elected. His support is zip, zero nada. You want more of the same ? Thats what you'll get with Brown.

Can't believe the quote from Jennings saying he looks forward to growing the businesses and jobs here. He has been a flop at that so far in his position with the Chamber. Look at our neighboring counties and take some lessons. He would be doing everyone a favor by retiring. Evidently our chamber needs an overhaul as much as our county commisisoner posts do. Lots of people want to be "figure heads" and not workers. If you are not in the "click", you are not an important part to him. Too much favoritism.

brown and anderson look to be the spoilers in the chairman's race.in a graham vs. yearwood race graham wins. but with brown and anderson in the mix too many votes will be split and yearwood might take it in a squeaker. go back and look at the votes brown got in the last d2 race, then see the vote count for anderson in 2010 d7 at large race.#'s don't lie, between them, more that enough votes to force a run off. don't write off the wild card factor of brown and anderson. i am sure yearwood and graham will not be bashing these 2 anytime soon, in hopes of avoiding a runoff, and i suspect they will be asking their supporters not to bash them either for the same reason the more bashing there is the more likely you will see an expensive run-off.

Yearwood is not going to run...guranteed! Can't get elected, no funds to fund his own campaign and no contributors. Simply ain't gonna happen.

Besides, I know he his called Dumbwood, however, even he can read the writting on the wall.

You can split the votes all you want, Yearwood would be out on the first ballot.

I've spent over 35 years in the business of working with major corporate, and some not so major, of locating their places of work. These decision makers not only look to the local government, but they research local blogs. No wonder the adjoinging counties are getting business-all you have to do is read your own blogs. They want a positive attitude from the citizens and that is something that will require more than an election-it will require a rethinking of everyone. Be positive about Barrow.

I agree 100%. I know for a fact that CAT looked at several pieces of property in Barrow County. After a brief study of the local government. They decided to move on down the road.

It's difficult to "be positive" and simultaneously tell the truth about the denizens of Barrow. It's an enclave of benighted yahoos. No wonder a major corporation would reject a venue infested with reactionary looped-on-the-lord clodhoppers. A motley collection of crackers who stupidly vote against their own interests time & again because they are too ignorant to discern who would best represent them.

I've stated similar points on this blog over the past few years. There was a time when small town papers could stir up opinion and still support local growth. As you can plainly see, that has become a lost art.

Get out of the negative arena and concentrate your efforts on inviting other well balanced, good moral character,non professional politician,someone that has corporate and business experience that knows how to sell and motivate. Eleminate any consideration of all the retreads from towns and other county office holders. After that, a local business/government team is needed to go sell Barrow. But while you are doing that, spend time and money on schools, well planned subdivisons, and roads, water and sewer.

Well thought comments. It's time the bickering ends between those "outsiders" who believe everyone born in Barrow County is a "good old boy", and it's time those born in Barrow stop with the "Delta is ready when you are" routine when arguments don't jive with their current opinions.

The petty jealousies of power, money, prestige, and influence must be turned into a force for good. Catapiller's announcemnet points to properity. Can Barrow leaders manage? Only time will tell.

there are many good candidates for boc and boe in this county. bill brown is well known and would serve barrow well, considering that ms. elder has done very little to improve barrow or d2. anderson has the experience and the right attitude to help barrow boe or boc to improve. we need positive attitude and team player mentality to break the cycle of doom. if either runs for office i will vote for them. you should too.

Trust me, you don't want the past mayor of Braselton. She could not sell this county to anyone. Find someone else.
