Public – and even political – intervention has not stopped Georgia’s state parks director from moving forward with a new fee for the use of the mountain bike trails at Fort Yargo State Park. Becky Kelley, director of the State Parks & Historic Sites Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, announced her decision in a Jan. 25 press release.
“Beginning March 1, a $2 daily or $25 annual pass will be required at Fort Yargo, Hard Labor Creek and Unicoi state parks. The existing $3 trail fee at Fort Mountain State Park will not change.”
As a result of bikers’ protests, Kelley did make two changes to her original proposal. She dropped from 40 to 20 the number of hours that bikers must volunteer in order to get free annual passes.
She also changed the requirement for mandatory check-ins at the ranger’s office for every visit. That now will apply only to bikers purchasing daily passes. Bikers with annual trail passes will not have to check in, the press release states.
The new fee has particularly infuriated members of the Yargo Area Bikers Association who, with the state’s permission, built both a 13-mile trail and a new one-mile children’s trail at the local park. The volunteers also maintain the trails year round, and even buy their own tools for the trails’ upkeep.
YABA founder Steve Gordon said the association might not be so generous in the days ahead.
“I think we’re going to put a little bit of the burden on the state now that they are bringing money in,” he said.

Good luck with this one Becky Kelley. Bad decision!
Maybe the local Park Chief can have so discretion on this issue?
This is just like other "Great Ideas" from under the Gold Dome, like the HOT Lanes, where taxpayers whose tax dollars ALREADY paid for a lane of traffic on I-85, must now pay to use it (they did not build anything new, they took an already existing road and now charge to use a lane that was once free).
I agree we need to fund things, like our parks, they are great resources and very important. I want ALL of the Funds generated at Fort Yargo to STAY at Fort Yargo... I bet that isn't happening, Yargo Fees probably fund other parks or even the General Budget.
Volunteerism should be promoted by the State, there are things the State may not be able to fund that Volunteers might be willing to do for free and that should be rewarded.
