Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith announced this week that he is kicking off his re-election campaign with a Feb. 3 event at Constance Manor in Winder.

The reception, sponsored by the Committee to Re-elect Sheriff Jud Smith, will be from 5-8 p.m. at the event venue at 70 Church St.

“I’m just letting people know that I do plan to run for re-election, and I look forward to the election season,” Smith said.

He said he hasn’t heard of any challengers who might emerge during the candidate-qualifying period of May 23-25.

“I look forward to May to see if there is going to be anybody there,” Smith said. “I can’t worry about it, if there is going to be anybody. I’ve got to run like there are six of us running.”

Real classy anonymous. Thats exactly the kind of attitude this county is full of. I may not like Jud, and may not vote for him, but he is the sheriff and deserves respect and dignity. Thats what we should teach our youth. Yet we have adults on here that are less mature than 4 year olds. Grow up.

I wonder how Jud will get along with Pat Graham? She ran the largest speed trap east of the Mississippi. She fought to keep Barrow deputies from giving speeding tickets in Braselton.

He has been a good sheriff so far. He has my vote. A LOT Better than what we had before and A LOT better than what ran last time.

Just wondering if he's such a good Sheriff why he allows one of his Major's to leave early almost every afternoon to pick up their child from school in a county vehicle in another county. Why are we paying this Major's salary. He doesn't even do anthing as it is. Comes in when he wants, leaves when he wants. Just sit on 211 a little after 3 anywhere between Winder and Braselton and you will see him almost every afternoon driving that pretty Charger waisting tax payer's money and county gas!!!

Doesn't surprise me at all. Don't worry things will catch up with him. He is not what people think he is at ALL but he will probley be re elected again cause of his name. O well. But just remenber whats goes around comes around and then everyone will know how he really is.

every man and woman working for this sheriff is on call 24 7, they need to take those cars with them, in fact he wants six new cars for the year, forty more deputies.. no cost is too great for the growth and safety of Barrow county or the job program planned by employing more police, more court workers more socail workers more lawyers more judges more jail cells more mechanics more bookkeepers more clerks after all safety is the best thing and no cost to great!!!

With the Sheriff's permission which is a violation of county policy. My children need a ride to school and from school. I will be waiting on the Major to give them a ride and save me some gas money since he is using my tax money to pick up his child.

the Sheriffs dept needs to keep good people, so what if they use Govt cars for personal use, although private citizens found using company cars for personal use have been charged under tax evasion laws and RICO when cars cross state lines, but then agian they are not Govt employees

ppl as i read i get more amazed ,,,judd smith is doing a great job ,, and lets see more officers at a school at a time when our kids are out walking home ,,,slowing down traffic and being seen worth the gas and time to me..

Im gonna go ahead and give Judd my endorsement for re-election. I think he has done a jam up job and will continue to do so.While it is true that I would like to see more drug related arrests , I think he has already arrested more than the last sherrif did and given the oportunity can clean this place up.

When the Sheriff but limits on take home cars, the major lost his. So he may or may not pick up his child from school but if he does I can assure you it's not in a county car. Yes you have no idea. His car was not taken away, he simply does not drive it to work. He gets to work when he pleases (no earlier than 9 am) and then leaves by 3 pm. He is salaried for 40 hours a week and does not even work 30.

yes it is against the law to use the Goverment owned and operated equipment to run for election this includes use of the wire to tranmit information, fax phone internet, it is CRIMINAL. just like personal use of cars other then drive to and from home in work reltated duties, when you see Goverment employees using Govt cars for personal use take a video send that video to the Inspector Generals office and also to the US Intertal Revenue Dept for tax purposes the personal use must be reported. failing to do so may result in Federal charges voth for Sheriffs office and for employee

The question will be...when was it added to the facebook page and by whom? Was it on the clock at the county, either by the Sheriff or his webmaster? Was the page updated on a County computer?

Get a grip people. If these complaints are the best you have concerning this office then re-elect without hesitation.
