The Winder Downtown Development Authority is getting some new muscle – and new talent – under the administration of Winder’s new mayor.
It became apparent Tuesday that Mayor David Maynard and city administrator Don Toms are giving the DDA a much bigger role – overseeing all annual community events held downtown.
Before one of the largest audiences ever to attend a DDA meeting, Toms explained that the authority would be taking over all city events other than the annual barbecue competition.
John Janick, a city contractor who is paid to manage the events, will continue to manage operations, but it will be the DDA that sets the event dates and hours starting in 2013, and it will be up to the DDA members to attract the participation of event volunteers.

Item 1. STOP the Destruction of the Granite Hotel.
Item 2 - Help fill, build and develop the Downtown back to a thriving center city area
All of those who are so opposed to tearing it down, get out your big, fat checkbooks and make it happen. Until you can personally finance it then please sit down and be quiet.
The City of Winder cannot afford it and my family cannot afford more gas, water, trash, sewer, etc hikes.
Sorry, but I prefer to keep the roof over my head, food on my table and clothes on my back to giving it up to save a building that would never be utilized.
