With time running out for public input, Winder city officials this week hope to intervene in the plan to tack on a new user fee for the mountain bike trails at Fort Yargo State Park. Winder Mayor David Maynard on Monday called the state’s proposal “the goofiest thing in the world” since volunteers built and now maintain the trails at their own expense.
“Because of their work, (the state) probably saw a big increase in park passes already, and now they want to make them pay to use the trails?” Maynard said. “Only the state would think of doing it this way.”
Winder provides free utilities to the park, and until a few months ago was also providing free garbage service.
Councilman Bob Dixon said state officials should have sought the input of city officials before proposing the new fee.
“We contribute to that park, but they never asked us about this,” Dixon said.
Time likely is running out. The public comment period ends Friday, Jan. 20. And based on a presentation at last week’s public meeting at Fort Yargo, it appears that a decision could be imminent. The next meeting of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Board is next Wednesday, Jan. 25. However, an administrative assistant for Becky Kelley, the director of the DNR’s State Parks & Historic Sites Division, said the decision on the fees would be the director’s alone, not the board’s.
“We are considering all the input,” said the aide. “The decision should be made within 60 days. It is going to come from director Kelley’s office.”

We may need to set-up an exemption permit for those who Actually Volunteer time to maintain the park trails, so if we could show the State Parks a list of those who can provide times/dates (or maybe a work registration somehow) where they have put in man hours towards the park trails, that those persons be given an Exemption Pass for that Bike Fee.
We BENEFIT from these VISITORS to our CITY, We need to reward the work done and keep this asset strong and popular. There is alot of potential with our Park.
Call your State Representatives & State Senators, not just State Rep Terry England, but many need to call their OWN Reps to get their support as well.
I don't have a dog in this hunt, however, I do agree that the state is always greedy and looking for a way to stick it to the folks. You want this to go away...pressure England.
