Today's the day. Two hotly-contested races in Barrow County will be decided in today's runoff voting. Barrow County Board of Commissioners chairman candidates Doug Garrison (incumbent) and Daniel Yearwood face off to see who will sit in the county's top elected position seat for the next four years. And the runoff between Donna Sikes and Brad Smith for District Attorney will also be determined today.
The chairman's race has at times been heated. Garrison has defended his record in office against a variety of criticisms, including the county's purchase of property at the 's airport and Garrison having kept an active real estate license while serving as chairman. In the last two weeks, the race even boiled over into a local church where some accused the church of having become too involved in the contest.
Likewise, the DA's race has also been heated between Sikes and Smith. Sikes was criticized over a direct mail campaign flyer that accused Smith of having let a man out of jail who later committed a murder in Florida. Smith said Sikes distored the facts in that case. Smith has come under attack from Sikes for his having worked under former DA Tim Madison, who was sent to prison this year on theft charges.
Tonight's results will be posted to www.BarrowJournal.com as the votes are counted.
Congratulation!
