BOE to vote on calendar Tuesday

The Barrow County Board of Education will vote on the school calendar for the year 2012-2013 at its meeting Tuesday.

Some 919 people responded to an online survey about the possible school schedule for the year, with a majority preferring Option 2. That option has a later spring break and predetermines up to six possible furlough days.

“You may recall that last year, we presented a calendar that was voted on and approved,” said superintendent Wanda Creel at Tuesday’s BOE meeting. “ In this calendar, we tried to go ahead and identify the furlough days. If we had to use them, those would be the days we would be out of school. It could be that we don’t have any of these furlough days.”

we talk about the importance of education for students; however, option 2 give the kids more of a break right in the beginning of the 2012-2013 year with 20 1/2 days off from August to December . . .really? It is 2012 and it is not like back in the 70's where only one parent worked to raise a family. Remember, whatever is decided upon, STICK with it and don't change it during the year. Like teachers, I am a parent that plans ahead with the vacation so can't wait to see what our wonderful board members decide for everyone :).

The BOE only vote on what the sup brings to them to vote on. She can opt to bring option #1 to the table or #2, it is up to her, they simply vote on her recommendation.

Either way, the majority on the survey, which is #2 is the one that she should bring, so no one can complain that their opinions dont matter. I personally would like to see a memorial day to labor day calender, get rid of this stupid fall break and have more of a summer with my kids, but that is not on the table

I spoke to the BOE and was told otherwise but thanks for your comment to mine and I agree to begin after Labor Day and eliminate fall break. . Parents have to make a choice when to take off of work with so many days off. It is all a bunch of political bs.
