Top 20 at BCSS netted $2 million in FY2011

The top 20 highest paid employees in the Barrow County School System last year made a collective $2 million in salaries and were paid another $15,100 in travel expenses last year.

Overall, the system paid out $67.9 million in salaries in FY2011 to 2,256 employees, including part-time and non-certified staff. That amount is just slightly more than the total salaries paid in the system in FY2010.

The highest paid employee in the system was superintendent Wanda Creel who earned $146,500 in salary and was paid $6,260 in travel expenses. She was the 58th highest paid superintendent in the state. Her salary was under most other area county superintendents in salary.Seven people in the system made over $100,000, up from five people who made over that amount in FY2010.

The best thing for the tax payers here is a buy out of the top people but it would have to go pretty deep to get rid of all the dead wood.that would give the system some breathing space for a few years before the salaries start creeping too high again.
I like what dr. Creel has done with the system, but I dont see where her salary should be 58th highest in the state.there is 159 counties in ga. and barrow is one of the poorest.

Barrow isn't one of the poorest. Go visit South Georgia sometime. Parts of Middle Georgia, too. You want to see poor? That's poor.

Actually, Barrow is one of the more prosperous counties, compared statewide.

When were these payments made? Were they for one year or cumulative over several years and how far do they go back? Just wondering since several of these folks have been dead for several years.

I found a link to a site where this info is listed, you were correct, these benefits were totals of those paid out from 1995-2010. Several only got benefits for disaster payments for droughts during certain years. It looks as though that not used for disaster are funds that were used for conservation measures such as fencing animals out of creeks and ponds.

So in addition to paying the low life scums way who are all on generational welfare, my tax money is also going to support the landed gentry . There is only so much blood that can come out of a turnip. ALL people need to get a job and stop sloughing off the public teat.That includes the no good bums as well as the no good farmers.Hell if you cant farm without the governments help ,maybe you shouldnt be a farmer.

It may be one of the poorest, but it is also a pretty large school system. Not sure exactly where it ranks but probably one of the top 50 in size. I don't think Dr. Creel makes enough considering what she has to put up with. What we need to do is get rid of some BOE members. 9 members of the BOE?!?! Really?!?!?

You would be supprised what they make a year. They get paid for every meeting, regular, called or otherwise. Travel expenses and a number of free vacations a year. Benefits, etc...all adds up to a lot per member per year.

Barrow school system is around 30th in size in the state based on student population. The relative wealth of the system would be in terms of tax base on a per student basis, but that only considers local funds, not state and federal funding.

Dr. Creel probably does deserve a raise, if nothing else for having to put up with so many of the peronal attacks. She is doing a good job and I think over time will weed out more of the GOB network that needs to go.

Dr. Darby's job should not be in judged based on ridiculous rumor. He is a great principal and cares very much about the students at WBHS. His personal life should not be a factor when it comes to whether or not he should keep his job. In my experience, most rumors that circulate through the community are untrue....I am sure that this is the case with rumors about Darby.

His personal life has everything to do with it. It's an ethical matter and should be dealt with accordingly. I can tell you this wouldn't have stood 20 years ago. The BOE now is too week to act even when it has the right. Where there's smoke there's usually fire.

With all due respect, I will have to disagree about his personal life being an issue here....someone's job should not come into question based on rumor. You see, there is no proof of any wrong doing...only rumor. I understand what you mean by the smoke and fire thing....so people believe what they want. But when it comes to ending someone's career, there should be solid evidence. What if this whole thing started because someone was angry with a decision made at the school? Also.. People tend to throw rocks at things that shine.....Job performance should be the number one thing considered in this case.

If Creel gets anything she deserves the "Old, Wadded-up, Worn out, Torn, No good" dollar that she compared the special needs students to at the Yea I Can banquet last year.

That lady needs to go! She is no better that that old dollar.

Get rid of her while you can and with no severance pay!
