Another company is considering making an investment in Winder. Aldi Inc. and the owner of a two-acre site at 160 May St. have an application before the Winder Board of Appeals – which is comprised of members of the Winder City Council – for a variance to allow a smaller number of parking spaces than currently would be required for a retail store.
The city requires 97 spaces, and the company wants to have a minimum of 75 spaces. The application will be heard at the end of the council meeting Jan. 10.
Yvonne Greenway of the city’s planning department said a preliminary site plan calls for a 15,800-square-foot building with about 9,700 square feet of retail space.
“It will be located in the general vicinity of where the Travelers Motel used to be,” Greenway said. That site is in the southeastern corner of the intersection of May and Horton streets.
Aldi Inc. is a German grocery discounter that targets customers who don’t mind a no-frills shopping experience if they can buy groceries at cheaper prices.
In 2010, Aldi opened a regional headquarters and distribution center off Dry Pond Road in Jackson County, but has not opened any retail stores in that county. It does have a store under construction in Athens.
Ingles = lots of variety, private label to high end gourmet hard to find items.Lots of Gluten Free and Organic items and Baggers to help to my car.
Aldi will serve a NICHE, but will present little threat to Ingles IMO.I'm KEEPING my Advantage card, but would possibly use Aldi to snag a few deals.
This store will draw shoppers from counties around us and bring back some of the sales tax dollars that are going out of town now.
A great store with super low prices...
THINK OF ALL THE MONEY that Barrow county would bring in instead of people like me having to drive to other towns to shop Aldi.
Aldi would be a huge asset to Barrow County! I know I have told lots of my friends about Aldi but they are reluctant to travel out of town to shop there but I know they would shop there if the store were located in Winder.
I don't have a problem with the location; I go right by there every day and will be easy to swing in and pick up items I need. Produce there is excellent and much cheaper than other stores!
I believe that if the "nay-sayers" would give Aldi a try they would love it too!
And as for bagging stuff yourself; its easy if you get into a system; I carry reusable bags in back of my car and have a couple insulated ones for cold/frozen items. I don't mind one bit for the money I save at Aldi!
Why? Because the attitude of the elected and appointed officials, as well as many private citizens is "we don't want no new comers, so go back to where you came."
I don't spend a dime inside Barrow, if I don't have too.
