The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office announced Jan. 2 that Sheriff Jud Smith has been appointed as the vice chairman of the Legislative Committee for the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association.
The Legislative Committee is composed of 25 Sheriffs throughout the state. Each committee member works closely with the Governor, Lt. Governor, and legislators at the capital throughout the year.
“It is a great honor to be appointed as vice chairman of a such an important committee for the GSA," said Smith. "I am humbled to be selected to represent the 159 Sheriffs throughout the state. I look forward to working with Representatives Terry England and Tommy Benton, Senator Frank Ginn, and other legislators in order to make Georgia a better place for our citizens.”
Sheriff Smith will serve a one-year term on the committee through 2012.

Some incumbents might be voted out in November but Judd Smith won't be one of them. Judd has the good ole boy network behind him...any you know what that means. He's there as long as we want him there...
as a taxpayer, don't we pay for public employee medical and health insurance...if so...Sheriffs, deputies and all the other employees should be restricted from unhealthy behaviour.
especially on public property.
And on a side note...if the sheriff cant make good decisions about his own health...why should we trust his judgement on anything else...Think about it????
That is about choice, if he wants to smoke, thats his problem, heck the BOC probably caused him to start smoking
DuWayne
Jud, why not just areest ALL drug sellers and users, how hard can that really be. These are the people responsible for 99 percent of crime in Barrow.
My regards and with all sincerity, to one of the finest group of people that I served with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and Detention Center.
Sirens and lights do not mean blast though intersections and hit people and the people you hit should say oh well its the Police, they did not mean to hurt us.
Good job Jud, get a leg up in 2012.
that being said most Police agencies and states atty offices do not prefer charges whuch is sad, because it only leads to more reckless conduct endangering innocent people all under the guise of protecting us.
-I never said he should not face charges or suffer consequences
-I was referring to the commit calling him a "killer"
-The point was he did not drive down the road with the "Intent" to harm someone as a murderer does.
-To the issue of intent, that is why there is "homicide by vehicle (felony) and (misdemeanor) when it is an accident it is charged as a misdemeanor.
-Now I fully expect the commits of ignorance such as , " someone that just has a few beers with dinner, and gets a D.U.I don't ave intent either".
-obviously that will be another showing of ignorance and should allow all others with the cognitive ability equal to that of a peanut to laugh.
To label him otherwise is disingenuous or cretinous.
He was driving a vehicle which collided with another vehicle; an occupant of the second vehicle died as a result of the collision. That's proximate cause. The cop's action caused the death of another human being. Therefore, describing him as a "killer" is 100% accurate.
Exacerbating the sad posure for the GSP in defending the wrongful death action soon to be filed is that this sorry law dawg had been involved in three other "at fault" wrecks since 2008.
IOW, the general in charge of the state cops knew this blue belly was a loose cannon and still permitted him to romp up & down the roads in his high-powered mow-sheen like any other psycho hillbilly.
Well, the chickens have come home to roost.
