Garbage rate increase set in Auburn

Auburn citizens will soon see a slight increase in their garbage rates from Republic Sanitation. The adjustment equals a 3.33 percent increase for garbage services, 95 percent of the full CPI, which is 3.5 percent.

Currently, regular garbage services cost Auburn citizens $15.51 per month. The increase will be 52 cents, which brings the new rate to $16.03 per month.

The increase of the senior citizens rate will be 45 cents, which would bring the new rate for those 65 and older from $13.11 to $13.44.

Brad Martin, municipal services manager with Republic Sanitation appeared before the council last week.

“I know I don’t need to tell you all with the economy what’s happened to those costs… anything that has to be trucked or moved and prices continue to escalate, so I’m certainly not one to be one to ask for an increase in rate if it wasn’t absolutely necessary,” he said.

Mr. Martin did come before the work session to present his request as required by our contract however this certainly does not mean council will vote to accept the increase.

And Republic has been offering trash/Yard Waste and Appliance pick-up in other areas for 12.00 per month, what a joke!!! Guess they need somebody to pay for those who get the GREAT rates but before the 12.00 rate will be in the 20's.

I think it is high time that we dumped the dump and go back to dipsey dumpsters. In a future Lagg administration there would be a couple of dumpsters at various , convienient locations around the county , people would come there with their trash and dump it , which would be picked up 2 or 3 times a week.The cost would be by law no more than 10 dollars a month and would be attached to property bills. Each property owner would pay 120 dollars a year for trash pick up. The trash mafia would be a thing of the past and Barrow citizens would be served in proper manner.Look for it after 2012, get a legg up in 2012.

Jack, do you really think folks are going to give up their house-to-house garbage pick up so that they can load all that smelly trash into the back of their SUV and tote it off to some dumpster? This was tried in the mid 80's. Trash all over the ground, sofa's, old appliances and running over dumpsters.

Nope..ain't gonna happen. Besides, you gonna put guards at each dumpster location 24/7? Who is gonna pay the salaries for those folks and their benefit package. Then there is the transportation to the landfill. You think those guys are going to let you dump it for free? Not a chance! That is why the county got away from that system years ago...just could not afford it.

Oh yeah Jack, I forgot to mention...you only have one vote on the BOC. How you gonna do all that by your self. It takes three others with your like minds to do some of the weird things you want to do. We got some nuts on the commission, however, they are not that crazy to try and take away house-to-house garbage pickup.

Nobody likes to be held up and that is just what the trash companieshave been doing for a while now. Look around neophite , folks are tired of paying through tthe nose for something that should cost a heck of a lot less.Im pretty sure that if we let the voters decide then they will vote for me which will put all of my cost saving common sense initiatives into place.
get a leg up in 2012.

Good luck with the organized crime on that one. I have to agree, what an "idiot". That amoung other things people tend to refer to you as. The rich people are not going to lug their trash to some natsy dumpsite with sofas and needles everywhere. Get a clue. You must be looking for a homesite and plan to leave on the dumpster site. That sounds like where you belong.

in barrow county and was told my rate would be 14.oo plus a month i called around and got one year deal for ten a month without having to puttrash in my car.......

nice thing is there are at least five other companies you can call negotitate a price with, rates and prices all open to being changed talk to the new companies tell them hey this is what I was paying can you match it!!

Its funny how everyone on here won't use their name. There are other companies out there. If you're dissatisfied, dump your current service provider and go with someone else. Republic services isn't hurting for money, they are a huge company looking to increase their purse, it's that simple and the reason I dumped them, no pun intended.

I did try to get another trash provider. I called all of the services I could find in the area. None of them would even consider picking up my trash because the great city of Auburn has a contract with the current providers (Robertson Sanitation). We citizens of the city of Auburn had no say and continue to have none in this matter. I have found that it is impossible to get any other company to pick up my trash because they cannot. I understand that the contract is supposed to be up in Feb. Not sure if the city plans to renew or not, but I personally think we should be able to choose our own provider. I found one that is much cheaper and recycles way more than Robertson Sanitation does, not to mention the fact that they donate money from the recycling to brest cancer research.
I would like to have the right and opportunity to choose my own provider. I do not have that right. The great governmental strangle hold prevents personal choice. Given the choice, I wouldn't choose Robertson Sanitation!
