Ground breaking begins on new middle school

After much anticipation, school leaders will break ground on the building of a new Barrow County middle school Dec. 14.

The ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. on Jefferson Street in Statham.

School officials approved a $13.2 million contract with Nix-Fowler Construction out of Mableton at a Dec. 6 meeting, where facilities director Jake Grant told the board Nix-Fowler Construction were “cream of the crop” school builders. Nix-Fowler’s bid is over $2 million under what the system budgeted for construction, from local and state funds.

The BOE approved the purchase of the 29.44-acre parcel of property in Statham for $275,000 in April, nearly two years after school leaders announced they would begin looking for a new location for a new middle school, which would replace the current Winder-Barrow Middle School.

Something to watch for here is corner cutting. You can build a building that looks real sturdy and very nice from the outside that would come apart like a single wide trailer in a tornado.
It costs a lot to build a scool for a reason. They are not only educating our kids but also are responsible for protecting them while they are there.The times that we are now living in dictate that governments cut back and history shows that the first place they always cut is in public safety and public safety in this case includes a very broad definition.Let us hope that the schools are doing their jobs in this area as they are in so many others.

they were trying to save money, I believe, and a lot of the work was done by volunteers. How fine a line do you want between saving money, and cutting corners?

saving money would be something like a less expensive trim or using volunteers to paint. Cutting corners would be something like skimping on foundation work because nobody sees it.
the county had to come back and spend a lot of money to fix the problems at the fieldhouse to even be able to use it.

As usual Jack, you are spewing out your pie hole on things you know very little about except what you read. The fieldhouse did have a leak, it was fixed using county dollars, but nowhere near the numbers others like yourself threw around. Plus the money used to pay for the fieldhouse goes through the county, but comes from a trust and it was earmarked by the handlers of the trust to pay for the fieldhouse, exclusively. The fieldhouse was built by volunteers and contractors that gave beyond measure. For instance, the parking lot and curb and gutter was donated, thats right completely free. That alone saved roughly 40K. The county now has a building worth 1.5 mil that hard costs were actually around 850,000, of which the county spent maybe 80-90k. Once again you reveal to us your intelligence. No need to argue this one, I was directly involved. So troll on over to another story and share your wisdom with them.

I dont doubt for a minute that you were"directly involeved" with this fiasco of a building. The way you get on this and many other blogs and spew your vomit it is obvious that you are a screw up who wants people to notice you and pay homage to you.That building could have been a gem bought for a song if it were not for your imput , now instead it is a money pit and always will be. Do us all a favor and drop out of any more donations to the community.

The WBHS fieldhouse construction was a complete disaster. They are STILL fixing problems with it. Fixing it with taxpayer dollars because all the money that was donated by the Harris Foundation was used up long ago.

it's called routine maintenance. The BOE spends lots of money on every building it owns. I commend those who volunteered and donated money for the field house. The players would still be in the old facility had it not been for those who contributed time and money....and no, I did not volunteer or donate. Was not in that loop.

I am happy to see these kids are getting a new school. WBMS has a lot of school spirit, but the building is like a tomb, stifling the potential of these great kids. They deserve to have a nicer place to learn, and the teachers deserve to have a nicer facility to work in. Long overdue!

should tear down WBMS, build new school then shut down Russell Middle (it's a pretty crappy building, too)
