The Flight School of Barrow County has announced a partnership with the new Tom Shaw Flight School located at the Jackson County Airport.
Barrow County Flight School owner Paula Cash said she is very excited about the new partnership.
“We’re reaching up to Jackson County,” she said. “The Jackson County Airport is just growing huge – it’s exploding, which is great. Tom Shaw is opening a school at the airport and I have purchased a plane (a Piper Archer) for him and I’m happy to announce our new partnership.”
Cash said Shaw, a former instructor with her school, is an excellent teacher and does outstanding work with the younger students.
One of the Barrow County Flight School’s biggest success stories involves Shaw and student Andrew Keeter, according to Cash.
The then 17-year-old Keeter visited the flight school as part of a Lanier Technical School aviation career day. Keeter decided to pursue a career in aviation based on his experiences that day and became an intern at the flight school. Within a year, Keeter had earned his private pilot’s license and is now planning to attend Middle Georgia College and major in flight management.
“Andrew is an exceptional young person,” Cash said. “We’re just so proud of him.”
Cash hopes the partnership with the Tom Shaw flight school will allow more young people to enter the field of aviation.
“For the young people, it instills such a sense of pride and self esteem to learn to fly,” Cash said.
“We’re really excited about the new plane and the Jackson County affiliation,” Cash said. “We’re expanding and we’re going strong here in Winder.”
