The case in question involved Caylor and his mother, Kimberly Caylor. In July of 2006, Caylor was arrested after the two became involved in a domestic dispute at their home in Auburn. Caylor was arrested and charged with interference with a 911 call, family violence battery and criminal damage to property.
Based on information obtained from the warrants, Caylor grabbed and twisted Mrs. Caylor’s arms and wrists causing red marks and swelling. He was also charged with breaking her eyeglasses by taking both hands and shoving her in the face. When Mrs. Caylor attempted to call 911, Caylor grabbed the phone and prevented her from completing the call.
Caylor pled guilty on all three counts and was sentenced to probation, fines and a mental health evaluation on August 16, 2006.
The accusation, in which Caylor waived arraignment and pled guilty, was signed by Smith on behalf of District Attorney Tim Madison.
At the time of the plea deal, Caylor was registered as a sex offender after a 2001 arrest and conviction for child molestation in Henry County. There is no information to indicate that Caylor was not in compliance with all applicable requirements related to his sex offender registration at the time of the 2006 arrest on unrelated charges.
Smith responded to Sikes’ accusations saying that he was not involved in the case and his signature appeared on the accusation because he was in court representing the District Attorney’s office the day that the case was presented.
In his response posted on www.BarrowJournal.com, Smith said the sentences were in line with what judges typically hand out for similar offenses.
“If the judge had not agreed with the sentencing negotiated by the ADA and defense attorney, he would not have sentenced the defendant to that,” Smith said.
The race between Smith and Sikes will be decided next Tuesday in the August 5 runoff. Early voting will take place this week.

I can tell you this-after casual conversations over the past year, Brad Smith is a man of character. He has a fervent passion for his work-and he has the same passion for his family.
I will appeal to the voters of these 3 fine Counties to stand up against an attempted character defamation-the mailer I recieved from his opponent was insulting, complete with a less than complimentary picture of Mr. Smith...that is the first clue, folks...
The real clue, however, is this. When a candidate is reduced to mudslinging, that candidate knows he or she is less qualified to win the vote, on his or her own merits. I was personally insulted to receive that mailing, and then to learn the true facts, and that in turn truly makes me wonder about the character of the person who sent it...
I know Brad Smith. I respect the man completely. I am pretty bright-this man is far more intelligent than I. This man has character and integrity to spare. And this man would have never done what he has been accused of in that flier-from our conversations, this man's sole purpose in life is to make the streets of this tri-County area safer for all of us law-abiding citizens.
In that, I implore all the citizens to get out for the run-off vote. And to vote for Brad Smith. He has shown his character and integrity with a simple rebuttal to that mailer, and has steadfastly refused to engage in the world of dirty politics. For that alone, he has my eternal respect.
Good luck, Mr. Smith. I sincerely hope that the citizens of these three fine Counties will not be swayed by an erroneous defamation of character...and I for one, will look forward to the day that you are standing tall in court, and keeping my family safe...
There is no way you can parse it to find any truth. There is no truth in it.
There is no polite way to put this: Donna Sikez is a liar. She is also unqualified to be DA. Ir would be a travesty if this inexperienced, unqualfied liar is elected DA. This is all true, and I don't mind signing it.
If we're not going to check the RSO list before giving felons probation, why do we even have the registry at all.
Mr. Smith's response of blaming everybody else ("The judge did it!") is embarrassing coming from a grown man.
Brad Smith never said, or implied that "the judge did it". He explained fully how the system works, that this was not his case, and that he would have had to sign the Accusation that day just because he was there. Period. Reread his post.
The 3 charges that day were all misdemeanors (that means not felonies)...
Finally, a registered sex offender is not a wanted criminal. A RSO is a free person walking around, standing behind you in line in the grocery store, living in your neighborhood.
Caylor pleaded guilty to 3 charges that were not sex crimes. Probation was the expected sentence.
Don't they teach Civics in school anymore??
Goodbye Donna. It's been nice knowing you...well, actually...no, it hasn't.
why politicians are not held accountable for their lies.
Especially lies in print. Is that not considered liabel?
It would be good to see charges made against these politicians who seem to have no morals at all.
I bet he wishes he could turn back time! But, now he knows the truth...that she is a snake.
Second, while I personally support Donna Sikes in this runoff, I still encourage each citizen to inform themselves about the issues and the candidates and vote their conscience. Both candidates have received endorsements, you must decide for yourself who to support.
Finally, there have been things said and done by both candidates and their supporters during this campaign that I do not agree with and even find disgraceful. Whether or not I agree with their campaign strategy is not the issue. If we voted against someone simply based upon their campaign tactics, there would be many races, local and national, for which we could not select a candidate.
I believe that continued change from the practices and leadership of the past is in the best interest of our community. While a majority of Barrow voters rejected that belief two weeks ago, we will know on Tuesday the direction voters in all three counties wish to go.
I wish the best for both candidates and their families and pledge to work cooperatively with my successor to ensure a smooth transition.
God bless.
Before the primary, Rick Bridgeman challenged Ms. Sikes to name the last 3 felony cases she had tried. She never could. Bridgeman's implication was that Ms. Sikes was not qualified to be D.A. because of this lack of experience. Now Bridgeman has endorsed Sikes. He is simply bitter because Brad Smith resigned to run against him and cost him his job.
I have handled more cases than I can begin to count against the Piedmont D.A.s office over the last 12 years. I have had the opportunity to see how Brad Smith handles himself as a prosecutor. He is the best man for the job.
so gullible we cant see what she's trying to do ? A liar
is not hard to spot.
If elected I can only imagine how long she would last
before being thrown out of office.
And I quote:
Citing her years of experience in private practice, Sikes distinguished her experience from that of the other candidates.
“I am the only one in this race that has never been trained or employed by Tim Madison and looked the other way at the corruption that went on in that office,” she said.
So why is he endorsing her when she called him corrupt before the primary? And why would she want his endorsement if she believed him to be corrupt?
Now we should vote Brad because he and his family have been through tough medical times? I'm sorry for his son and pray he recovers, but you Smith supporters are truly hypocrites.
And the Healans are VERY WELL respected lawyers around here.
As far as Billy Healan goes, he was commenting on Brad's work ethic and what kind of a man he is. He is not a loser and if you know anything about Billy Healan you would know that he is a very talented defense attorney and is highly respected. Just because you are on opposite sides doesn't mean you don't have respect for eachother. It doesn't automaticaly mean you are in eachother's pockets. Respect is earned and Brad has earned it by being fair, honest and a talented prosecutor.
1. Which of you has tax leins against you?
2. Which of you have been married several times?
3. Which of you have never tried a felony case in Barrow COunty?
4. Which of you have indictments pending against your husband?
5. Which of you when you got divorced - your kids went to live with their dad?
6. Which candidate was forced to resign from the City of Arcade?
7. Which candidate has the least amount of qualifications for the job?
Boy- somebody has a lot of baggage-
