The well-known director of the Piedmont Judicial Circuit’s new drug and mental health courts was fired Sept. 27 after being arrested for groping a female dance partner at an Atlanta nightclub.

Sammy Hale Jr., 46, of Statham was taken into custody at the Loca Luna nightclub on Amsterdam Avenue around 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

The alleged victim, a 36-year-old Atlanta woman, called the Atlanta Police Department and when officers arrived, she reported that Hale had “unwantingly” groped her buttocks and another area of her body.

The arresting officer went with the woman into the club, where she identified Hale. The officer took Hale by the wrist and escorted him outside to a parking lot, where he was informed that the woman wanted him arrested.

The officer said Hale denied touching the woman in an unwanted manner, but he was under the influence of alcohol, was not initially compliant with all of the officer’s requests, and let it be known “several times” that he worked for the Barrow County District Attorney’s Office.

An investigator also reported that Hale told the victim he had “immunity against the law due to his position with the District Attorney’s office.”

Hale was charged with one misdemeanor count of sexual battery, booked into the Fulton County Jail on Sept. 12 and released the following day on a $2,500 bond.

There are things about Barrow County's Judicial System that this Barrow County Family likes and dislikes.... and the one thing that we are liking is the new "drug and mental health courts". For those that have "True" doctor documented mental challenges - those courts are working for the individuals.
It saddens us, but does not surprise us that a member of Barrow County's Judicial System has been arrested and fired.
Very proud of that Atlanta Woman for standing up for herself - not backing down from the subtle threat of - “immunity against the law due to his position with the District Attorney’s office.”
Very Happy that the Barrow County District Attorney's Office fired Sammy Hale, Jr.
Disgusted that this could reflect upon the good work that is being done for the Drug and Mental Health Courts people- casting a shadow on those that take the responsability of their positions seriously.

If Sammy were really innocent, why would he feel the need to threaten the victim with his "immunity". Even if you don't believe the victim, which might be valid, why would he imply to the Atlanta PD that they should reconsider arresting him due to his ties to the DA's office?

I know Sam Hale very well and for those who don't know him shouldn't comment!!!! To make a statement about the woman who stood her ground is crap! Know the full facts! This lady who claimed this on Sam called for the police in the restroom on her cell and not once go to the bouncers or the on duty police officer at the place. That alone spells out SET UP! Then when they went to court she claim it could have been someone else, really?!?! Get your story straight if you're planning on ruining someones life! If she felt so bad about the situation answer this... WHY WOULD SHE GO BACK INTO THE CLUB TO CONTINUE PARTYING??? I'm a woman and I hate when women go so low for money or for attention, that makes her no better than a woman selling herself on the streets!!! I wish Sam the best and hope this blows over he'll always have the support of his REAL FRIENDS and REAL FAMILY!!!

To continue my fustrations, why would someone in Barrow County want to put this in the paper without facts??? and to have his picture on blast!? Don't you think it would make Barrow County look better having full facts before blasting someone in the paper? I have lost all my respect for Barrow County with their back woods way of doing things what's next?

come like some goverment agencies if not in the county not on county time you get fired for showing or threatening persons with your power.

Yes some goverment bodies if person is not on Govt business and active are forbidden with punishment being lose of job from showing county creditails or mentioning they work for the county.

Now that would be nice to see in Barrow some county employees not abusing the trust.

Since we don't know the facts and most of you writing don't know Sammy, why don't you wait until it all comes out before passing judgement? New concept of course. Let us be for real here.

If The Barrow Journal did not have facts, they would NOT publish it....What was he doing in an Atlanta nightclub INTOXICATED?? Not a real good role model....Hmmmm........Even if he "mentioned" he worked for the DA's Office and "therefore would not be involved in something like this" we ALL know that is BS! Talk about getting "for real" here....
He thought it was like it is here in Good Ole Barrow County-Just mention your position and you get to go free.......but He learned the hard way that The Atlanta Police Dept. could care less what you are up here in Barra County, because they think we are a bunch of backwards idiots anyway!
Kudos to the woman for having the guts to follow through.

When you're in a club not saying it's ok for someone to touch you but you are in a enviroment that is crowded what do you expect? Again if she felt violated why did she go back inside after he was arrested to keep partying? She blew it up to much.

Guilty or not, the only thing that truly bothers me about this article is the face that he tried to used his position in the BC court system to get out of it. I am sick and tired of people in a "higher position" in the law attempting to exempt themselves from the laws they impose.

It's called protocol regardless if he's right or wrong, they would have to terminate to keep their nose clean. This person never been convicted in life or never even gotten a speeding ticket. Clean record serve on multitudes of broads and well respected person in the community, come on really people? Although judging by these comments, he's getting no respect at all. So sad that a person gives his all to his community and the community spit in his face!? Could it be possible he's innocent? We all have been in a bar or club tons of people and gotten touched on accident. I know that this person is innocent and didn't do what this crazy lady claim. I dont think that "we have all been in that situation"as you say.This episode speaks of a deep character flaw. While not everyone is perfect, lets try not to say that "any of use" could be in this same situation. Is he a married man ? then why is he with a floozy ? is he a christian? then why is he drunk in public?
We need our public employees to realize that they have the publics trust when they take on one of theses jobs, and act accordinly.

Let us then hope that never a picture appears in the paper or anywhere else with anyone in a public position be seen holding anything that looks like it has alcohol in it. Not even a glass or water. the perception then would be we were "drinking" on our own time. You Know of the social functions we have seen with photos in the paper.

There are NO facts to back this up..only heresay from a girl that he refused to buy a drink for..all the true facts will come out in his court case when he is totally exonerated..but I bet You The BARROW JOURNAL will never report that!! He has not been convicted only accused...Its a shame that a hard working man such as Sammy Hale would lose his job over an incident in an Atlanta nightclub...He has been as enormous asset to Barrow County and has a heart as big as Texas..Justice will be served when he this case is dismissed and charges dropped for lack of evidence...

i am very sure the paper wont print he was innocent and im sure he wont get his job back. it seems to me that police officers abuse their positions and if they were held accountable for false arresting people the court system would not be as screwed up as it is.

As Public servants Teacher Preachers, youth leaders etc you should expect to be held to higher standard not upset when being a ROLE model one of your other role models bring bad light on the whole.
As PUBLIC servant you are held by the public that pays your salary, encourages the children they have to trust you, the elderly that raised them to trust you to have faith that you DO at all times have the future of those unable to protect themself rights first and foremost.
Yet as PUBLIC sevants and role models when everyone gets upset due to this abuse of trust many PUBLIC servant cry they are misunderstood.
They like to claim nobody understand them, you become a public servant because it is right a role model because it is right.
it used to be one was firemen and had job that paid more, Preacher and maybe had other job also, teacher who did it because it mattered maybe had other part time jobs to help,
The new PUBLIC servants of today seem to put what is in thier interest and self before what thier vocation of CHOICE is.
Please as PUBLIC servants you fail to realize with all the public that looks up to you trusts you and sometimes need you when you dont hold eachother to a standard of maintaining even the appearance of wrongdoing then don't be so surprised when the people that pay you salary get upset when one of you gets arrested,makes the news for stating who they are or know, uses thier job for extra favor.

No problem with the going out part, HE put himself in that predicament and now he's paying for it. You CANNOT work for the public in that position he had and put yourself and the jurisdiction you work for in that situation. I am pretty sure that Mr. Hale signed some document upon employment that in some way or another stated, "No contact or dealings with person(s) of nefarious character or establishments of the like". Enough said, the officer had enough probable cause to arrest and his booking photo is on display here. Now so far as his comments of "Immunity against the law due to his position" I call BS to that statement, he IS NOT immune to the law........case in point, see the WSB-TV website about the patrol officer arrested for DUI. I myself am a public safety employee in another jurisdiction and would not be caught DEAD in a club due to the chance you take when you are there.

I really have to say that we live in a perfect little town because from reading these comments everyone is perfect. I only know of one perfect man and we all know who that is, so why are so many being judgmental. I was not at the club with Mr. Hale or the young lady but I am aware of how the club environment operates and the atmosphere that happens when alcohol comes into the situation. I believe Mr. Hale has a right to a personal life regardless of his position and the young lady was drinking also and can not remember if Mr. Hale was the one who touched her or not. Most clubs in Atlanta are overcrowded, it is almost impossible to not touch someone in some way and let’s not discuss the dance moves. Being so critical of someone without knowing all the facts on both parties part is not justice for either parties involved. Some of you should spend more time on your knees praying that things you have done in your life never come to the light for all to see because if the truth be told we all have some things that we would rather not come to the light for all to judge.

There is a story in the bible that is relative to this and it comes from the book of John 8:7 when Jesus is facing an angry crowd who was ready to execute a woman because she was caught in an adulteress situation and he stood up and told the crowd that if you have no sin in your life then you should throw the first stone. People should not judge others until they have addressed their own faults in their lives. I tend to think that we all have areas in our lives that we are not proud of and know we need to improve. We our in times that we need to stop gossiping about people and pray for individuals in our community because the spot light can easily be shining on us next. Praying for our community, and all involved in this situation because we were not their and we do not know the facts of the case.

Well when Winder/ Barrow County gets the size law enforcement and civilian population as New York, then I will be concerned. Half of these are only one step up from Barney and could not plant something and make it stick any way. Give us all a break.

sure they do? when they decide if they need to invisigate, Big cities have dept that is dedicated to rooting out bad cops, they dont do well at finding them, this case the reason they got caught was not the Police Video and recordings but video and recording equipment of those charged.
Smaller depts with less oversight have just has much if not more police wanting to be top of the chain.
when the organizied crime in NY killed 30 people same time period down here in Georgia according to FBI there were over 150 organized crime murders that largely went unsolved.......
so if you think that corruption is only the big city then someone is living in fairy tale land.

Stephen Anderson is one cop, not ALL cops. There is crime and corruption in EVERY career field, not just Law Enforcement. It, However, is Law Enforcement that 90% of the time get the stereotype due to a few bad apples.

As far as the comparing corruption in " other fields", corruption is corruption. Period! But let's just look at these other fields that are ok in your eyes, the ones you defend......Your ok with your wife going to a doctors appointment and being inappropriately touched? If you think I chose this career for the money, your wrong again. Believe it or not, I am actually one of those cops who takes pride in doing what I do. Although some of the posts may have you, as well as others, thinking different. I have absolutely no patience for dirty cops and believe they should be given double time when convicted of any crime. I take my oath seriously, as well as my job. When I see that I am being compared to the dirtbags that shot and killed Mrs. katherin Johnson in Atlanta, then tried planting evidence and falsely swearing in the court of law, your damn right I get mad. Oh I am a good cop, promise. How, may I ask, am I not acting like one? If Standing up for myself and every other " good " cop that is being compared to the bad ones is making me a "bad cop " then I am guilty. If this is what you are in fact referring too, me standing up to the harsh critics who talk crap about the ones who put their lives on the line for them, then question our judgement on why we did , or did not do, what THEY wanted us too, or it wasn't too their liking.
So what do they do? They find anything they possibly can on the news and find a rogue cop in New York or Atlanta who NEEDS to be in jail, comes in this forum and automatically puts all other cops, me included, on the same playing field as these dirty ones. What, do y'all think that we get pulled aside in the police academy and are taught how to be dirty? Cop A in Texas plants drugs in a car so cop B in Barrow County MUST be the same way.
The actions of the dirty ones go WAY back to before they even thought about being a cop. If your a unethical person, it won't matter what career you choose, you will be the same person. Unfortunately for us, meaning the "good cops", they choose this field because it is an easy way to throw their authority out there and get what they want.

I think you get my point, or if anything, see my side a little. Didn't mean to go into this huge rant but, hopefully opened some eyes. If not, that's fine too. Hot headed? Please show me exactly how I am hot headed? Once again, read past posts before you comment on something you THINK you know about. Go back a few months and read some comments and personal attacks in here towards cops in general, my wife and myself, then come back and tell me if I am "hot headed" and still need an 'attitude adjustment". Most of these attacks are,and were unprovoked and unjustified and most likely posted by the select few who haave the " I dont care" attitude on life and no regards to authority or law. They choose to use the Barrow Journal as an outlet to vent. Get the little bit of attention they have yearned for most of their lives.
You would be suprised how little attitude I actually have. I prefer to call it Lack of Patience for those I just described.

There are quotes in the papers here and in surrounding counties and a place to blog on his notice. His coaches are quoted and several of his classmates.
I am sad at the loss of such a young life. He was bright, POLITE and a very thoughtful young man. He was loving and caring. I did not feel that the section provided here announcing his accident was where I should state my feelings. I told them to his family. so before you decide what is important to all remember people handle things differently. I am concerned now about the assumed guilt of another young man I know that has not even been brought to trial.
And knowing him as I do, I can see him set up by this young woman and trying to explain to the police how he would not do this and mention the DA's office. However it will fall on deaf ears.

I have a few observations based on the news reports.

The Banner-Herald reports Hale was suspended on Sept 16 (five days after the arrest) when the judge "learned" of the arrest. Did Hale not report his arrest to his superiors? Why did it take court officials five business days to either learn about the arrest or decide whether to suspend Hale?

Who was Hale's employer? I understand he had previously worked for the DA and is reported to have told Atlanta Police he worked for the DA, but the Banner-Herald reported that he was fired by the judge? Was he an employee of the DA or the judge? If he was not an employee of the DA, would it not be a crime to impersonate a DA's employee? If he was an employee of the DA, why did the judge handle the suspension and termination and not the DA?

Anyone know?

The woman told police that is what he told her. It did not say he was drunk or under the influence. it said he was not initially compliant. That part of the report are the observations of the police officer, NOT what the victim said.

According to what is reported, the officer saw Hale under the influence of alcohol, Hale was not initially compliant with the officer's requests and Hale let it be known "several times" (to the officer) that he worked for the DA.

Looking at the picture, looks like he had a few drinks to me. Doesn't look like the person I see in Walmart from time to time. What kills me about all this comments is that none of you were there to know what happen that night. You all are so quick to judge something you all did not witness. Who to say the female and police office is not lying.People do lie and set people up.I hope one day you all find yourself in same situation and see how it feel to be accused of something that you did not do. Who ever wrote this article are leaving out critical detail of someone who witness this. The man said Mr. Hale had not done anything to the woman and did not say anything about him having immunity from the law in the Athens Banner Herald. Barrow Journal you are not stating all the fact. He is good person, and try to help in way he can and for you all to kick him while he is down Barrow County you should be ashamed. He should not have lost his job.Barrow County has county and city employee who has done things way worse them him and not lost job. He has not been even prove guilty of anything. But I see Barrow County really stands behide their employees don't they.
