The number of students enrolled in Barrow County Schools has decreased from the 2010-11 year.

According to data presented to the Barrow Board of Education Tuesday night by student services director Ken Green, there are only 12,908 students enrolled in the school system— a 1.26 percent change from the previous year.

The school system’s enrollment saw a significant decrease between the school years of 2007-08 and 2008-09, which was a change of more than four percent or 450 students.

Home school enrollment counts in the county have dropped, as well.

In the 2010-11 school year, there were 275 families using a home study program for 472 students.

Currently, there are 354 students in Barrow County that home school— a population drawn by 193 families in the county.

Parents who homeschool their children have to submit a declaration of intent form to the school system each year by a September deadline or by 30 days after they begin a home study program, said Greene.

its not too hard to figure out, all or most of the illegals have left to seek greener pastures.Parts of norcross are like a ghost town now.This is one of the advantages of a poor economy.

Look at Barrow County. Why would people want to stay here, or come here. Look at our out of control politcs and the ones seeking election. Jack Legg, really. Makes me want to stay here. NOT

Wonder how the BOE and teachers can blame this on the parents. I am sure they will come up with some ideas. Jack or Beth will have an idea I am sure?

All three of my kids are in an on-line school. They're grades dropped the first year we enrolled them because an "A" in Barrow is the equivalent of a "C" for national schools. But, they are all back up to "A" again on most subjects. And I never have to go to PTO or buy any candy bars!

Look here for info on Georgia Cyber Academy.

Students are still considered to be part of the public system and are not counted as homeschooled by the county. GCA is online, free of charge and supplies are shipped directly to your home. The curriculum follows state standards but you are free to supplement as you see fit. There are caps on enrollment and applications are generally accepted in mid to late May. If you are a stay at home parent and not quite ready to make the full leap to homeschooling on your own, I highly recommend it

No, they are not part of the Barrow County enrollment numbers. Enrollment in GCA requires full withdrawal paperwork to be filed with the county school system.

thats just crazy talk, home school is ok ...IF the parent has enough sense and fortitude to teach on a consistent basis.Some probably do , others ... the kids just dont get anything out of it. Public schooling is not all bad, what you have to understand is that to work it has to educate to the minimum. that is teach people to read and write and do some math.anything other than that minimum is up tothe parents to teach.

Public school is only a TOOL in which parents have to educate your children. There is far more to life than what is found between the 4 walls there. The rest is up up the parents. That idea has been lost.
What is taught or should be taught at home is reinterated there. (CHARACTER ED., money handling say no to drugs. etc.)
We have always been pleased with Barrow county schools. Our children have succeed there and have managed well in college. But this is the approach our parents had and we did the same for our children. It is called parent responsibility and I have sold candy bars and t shirts and ads and worked carnivals and got to know the teachers, parents and the kids in which my children spent and spend the majority of their time 10 months out of the year.

I guess why enrollment is down is due to the new imigrations law. Alabama has had a mass exodus of mexican's with there new imigration law. Are we all happier with higher food prices, since all the imigrants have left? All the unemployed get ready, plenty of crop picking and chicken processing job should be available.

Theres nothing wrong with those kinds of jobs, they are basic low level jobs that allow a person to work and not have their soul stolen by the state.The trouble is that too many have indeed lost their souls and expect the govt. to provide for them. Too many think they deserve to start at the highest wage with the least amount of education or skill. Thats part of whats wrong with America.

I dont know how your post has anything to do with what I just said,butI seriously doubt that their are any "unethical personnel dealings" that go on in Barrow county schools that dont also go on in every other school system in Georgia. Politics is rampant in school heirarchy as it is in all government jobs and those on the loosing end always think they have been singled out. Sometimes they have, sometimes they are just trying to do their job and get gamed by someone else trying to put a feather in their own bonnet.
If somebody is playing with other peoples careers in our school system then time will show them.In the mean time those who want a good school system need to work in the framework that we have.

Agree with what? That if you ignore something it just goes away! guess what, if my child was not a Senior and she was just starting school or middle school or high school, I would take her out of this school system so fast it would make your head spin!I would home teacher, put her on a computer or send her to a private school. all because of the teachers? Hell no. i have witness Ms. Creel at her best and that is not what I want leading my daughters education!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What makes you think some of us do not volunteer and mentor and involved in the programs in our children's and grandchildren's schools. Creel has history. You should hear the stories about her when she was here in Houston county. We all partied when she left. She is a cancer wherever she goes. You should get rid of her as soon as you can or she will corrupt your whole school system.

My oldest son was home schooled after the middle school. He now is the director of maintenance for a charter airline company in VA. He is 21. My next child was home schooled for a couple of years and then went to high school at Jefferson where he played football for a championship team and then entered the Army. He is 19. My daughter will graduate from Jefferson in 2012. She plays basketball and will receive scholarships to college where she will study to become a surgeon. All three of mine are honors students. Home school and Jefferson are/where just much better options for us than the Barrow county school system or the private schools the area has to offer. While we are Barrow County residents, the schools just weren't for us.
