A Snellville man faces a vehicular homicide conviction after he ran a stop sign causing a crash that killed a Winder woman. The accident occurred just after 10 a.m. Sept. 14 at Ga. Hwy. 82 and Nunnally Road in Barrow County.

According to the accident report, Jerry W. Barton of 3285 New Castle Way, Snellville, was driving a 2010 Ford F150 at 45 miles per hour when he pulled out in front of a 2005 Jeep Liberty occupied by two people.

The driver of that car told police she was unable to avoid hitting Barton when he pulled out in front of her from Nunnally Road as she was traveling eastbound on Ga. Hwy. 82 at a posted speed of 55 miles per hour.

Initially, Barton was issued a citation for failing to stop at a stop sign.

The victims were taken to Athens Regional Hospital by Med Unit 6 within 35 minutes of the crash, where Ruth Bruce, 82, later died. The coroner ruled her death blunt trauma sustained in the crash.

Barton was then arrested on warrants for failure to stop at a stop sign and vehicular homicide in the second degree. He was booked into the Barrow County jail on Sept. 19.

The accident report states drugs or alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

It was an accident, is putting this man in jail going to solve this, is fining him from the court going to help the family get any money he may be liable for quicker.
Why is jail going to help anyone in this case?

Well we give people more jail time and punishment for the cruelty to animals(which I somewhat agree with), but when a person kills another person, they get off "scott-free"? Where is the brains of the people in our country? Off on permanent vacation? I would press hard to get him some prison time after finding out the circumstances but he would pay something. The family of the deceased didn't get a say in anything after their loved one got hit, so why should this man's life not be interrupted?

PEOPLE HAVE TO BE LIABLE FOR THERE ACTIONS.WHAT EVER THE LAW IS,PEOPLE JUST DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO THERE SURROUNDINGS AND IN THIS CASE IT COST A PERSON THERE LIFE.SO YES HE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

ok, so someone who blows a stop sign kills your grandmother/wife/uncle etc and you are ok with him not being held accountable in a court of law?
You should know that our district attorney will just give him probation anyway, so he is as free as anyone

what is the reason for charges of criminal natuby
an error in judgement will not be fixed by putting him in jail.
chances are the party that was killed family may wind up being hurt when this fellow loses his job and cant make monatary arrangment for the error he caused cause he is jobless.
JAIL is supposed to be used to punish people for willful acts and to be used to correct poor actions.
no drugs no liquor no beer involved just a person made error in judgement.
What will putting him in jaol do to change his future or protect citizens of Barrow in the future?
can we please quit arresting everyone even if it is an accident not a pre conceived plan to hurt others.
to be honest I think living with knowing you caused a death weighs more then any turnkey jailer or court can put on you.

"ok" actually you are wrong. In this case the jail is used to make sure he will appear in court to answer to this awful situation where he will be held accountable for his actions. He will be given a bond hearing where bond will be set and he will be allowed to make that bond and leave. The bond is just making sure he will appear in court for his charges since he is not in jail where we know he will appear. Please dont say things that you have no idea about. If you dont like the fact he was put in jail to make bond, then have the laws changed. have a good day

again I read where a person ran a stop sign and killed someone and everyone thinks he should not pay for this , someone needs to be in the shoes of the loved one , was he on a cell phone no one will know , I have lived with losting a love one were someone has ran a stop sign and killed two people one was my little 10 year old baby girl the other was her best freind , this happen 17 years ago and it still hurts to know the man that ran the stop sign was not giving a ticket or any time in jail or was it on his driving record that he killed two people , he was married and had a little girl also but he was going home from seeing his girlfriend so i wonder what he was thinking about , not getting in trouble with wife?. and to the one that said he will have to live with it that is true but some people can live with it because they dont care .

I think everyone that has a negative comment to say should just keep there mouths closed I wonder if you ever stopped to think that maybe the family didnt have anything to do with him being locked up. The law is put in place for everyone that breaks the law and the charges he was charged with are there just because things like this happen....The woman that lost her life was related to me and she was very special to everyone she knew....No locking him up will not bring her back but like I said that is what law enforcement done not the family....

I wasnt blaming the family at all I was in fact saying putting this man in Jail does not have a purpose he was cited for running the sign.
it was an accident.
I have a freind who i guess ten years ago ran a sign every time he sleeps he wakes with night mares for the result of him running the sign someone died.
he was given a 30 day sentence he lost his job.
he lost his ability to make any finacial reparations to the family of the lady that diedin his accident.
I am not blaming the family at all.
Sorry if in any way I appeared to blame the family.
I also was run over well my automobile had the trailer of 18 wheeler take my car under it, drag me almost a mile, luckily no one was killed.
this was an acident the driver once he realized what happened stopped helped and did the right things.
he got a ticket, it was an accident, the insurance paid medical and car repair I let it go at that, I didnt pursue making sure he got fined or anything since it would not benifit him or I by being fined.

This was not an accident. This was negligent. Negligence on the act of the driver that ran the stop sign. In this case, it cost someone their life. There are no such things as accidents.

The police agency can or may choose not to file request for charges.
Second the atty for the goverment may choose not to file charges.
nothing mandates that charges must be filed.
sometimes common sense should come before filling the Jail, the Court docket and the Probation offices with clients.

As I have been one of those people to cause an accident and because of that someone has died. I believe most of you should keep your mouths shut for the simple fact of.......this effects both families greatly. Not only is somones mom, sister, daughter, and friend died, but the person who caused the accident may end up doing a long stretch in prison. Which in terms ruins exponential amounts of people lives from his daughter and wife to everyone who knew him and the lady that died. I wonder if any of you know anything about the Bible or any other religious writing. All of which explain that the greater power in the world uses all of us to do its will/bidding and that we should forgive all of those who in some way may have done us wrong. Anyone can or could hurt, offend, or cross another just as simply as to not say hello one day. Hopefully you see where this is going if not........I hope you figure it out one day before it is to late.

someone always has to play the religion card.this is the act of gross negligence.this was not an accident.obviously the man wasn't paying attention to the road and as a result someone was killed.i've made mistakes in my life and i've always had to pay for them.if i had to suffer because of my actions then it was deserving,if it cost this man jail time,loss of income pain and suffering then he's paying the price,everyone pay's one way or another for there actions.

hmmm wonder if a fit of sneezing happened, leg cramp, or just plain wore out fro working working working.
Glad to see you are perfect and dont believe in accident.
yes nothing is an accident, we could all be put in comas and kept in bubble wrap and stay in storage and that would helpmake sure there is no negligence.
I hope you never make an error in judgement,
I hope you never forget your wallet and need someones help to get somewhere.
yes no one forget their wallet the neglet to get it.
i hope you never cause affront to another.
I hope when you do cause someone else to be harmed or hurt due to life going on they have the moral fortitude not to want you imprisoned.

IF I DO SOMETHING TO HARM SOMEONE ELSE AND BY LAW I HAVE TO PAY WITH A PRISON TERM THEN I WOULD HAVE TO EXCEPT IT.THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED A LAW AND IF YOU BREAK THE LAW THEN YOU SHOULD SUFFER THE PENALTIES.

Perry 1 you and people like you are as asinine as they come. You probably believe that the government only plans to protect the people too. All the government is..:.....is a very large business. They are not here for you, me, or any other person walking around on or in this country, continent, or world. The government you talk about has been lost to nothing more than a lot of egotistical power freaks. Their entire objective is to get the people to rely on the government for every need, want, and essential. It is the biggest business ever built. The few things the government sees are money, power, and the need for more of both. If it(the government) gives you something it is a tactic to get you to rely more on them and less on yourself or others. POWER OVER THE PEOPLE

well I guess we should just build more jails, hire more guards, build more scattered site housing for all the prisoners when released cant get hired.

by making an error in judgement is different then breaking a law, breaking a law is a purposeful choice.

making an error is just poor judgement for any number of reasons not intentional or even birderline negligent. certainly not something that we should idairymanetienne@yahoo.commprison people for.
imprisoning people up till 1972 was to reform them after 1972 the Dept of Prisons decided it was just to employ people and warehouse people. provide monies to foodservice and dairy industry for food and beverages.

Does anyone get that an accident is sometimes just an accident. Every accident doesn't have to include a lawsuit. I doubt he pulled out just to injure and kill someone. He doesn't look too pleased with himself in the photo. He looks quite contrite. Maybe he just didn't see the car or the stop sign or whatever.
