The Barrow Journal garnered 2nd Place for Best Editorial in the National Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest for 2011.
The NNA hosts an annual awards competition among its community newspaper members across the nation and the awards were announced this month.
The winning entry was for an opinion column written by Journal co-publisher Mike Buffington in 2010 that took county leaders to task for attempting to make newspapers pay for officials’ time when they talked to reporters. The column was titled, “Public officials can’t charge for talking time.”
Judges said of the column: “Love this! Way to fight for open meeting laws and not back down from government pressure.”
It is the first NNA award for the Journal, which began publishing three years ago.
Earlier this year, the Journal won 2nd Place in General Excellence as the overall best weekly newspaper in its division in Georgia. The Journal has also won several other top state journalism awards in journalism, sports, photography and other areas.
The Journal is Barrow County’s only locally-owned newspaper and is published by Mainstreet Newspapers, Jefferson, and is owned by the Buffington family.

posture in the political arena. The freedom of
the press only strikes fear into wrong doings of
of public officials and offers a public awareness
that may not have been available to the hurried
lifestyles of our citizens. I feel that public
awareness is a responsibility of a local paper.
I say "Bravo" to Barrow Journal and the
Buffington family. A job well done!
Barrow Journal is not only the sole, real news stream and source for public awareness of our area, it is also a thoughtful and concerned 'citizen' of our county that has the courage to report some stories, that at times, bring some ugly and uncomfortable truths to light.
Congratulations on a fine job!
But be sure and give credit to the BCC Chairman for providing such a softball for the publisher to hit out of the ballpark? You couldn't have done it without him.
We DO appreciate the job you all do, and we appreciate this "comments" section! It DOES give the Citizens a place to vent!
Thank You Mr. Yearwood for being such a Doofus and giving The BJ so much to report on! LOL
Look for the good work to hel your fellow man be a better person by example not by threat of force or threat of loss of freedom.
