Simmering frustration over state regulators’ 2010 takeover of downtown Winder’s former community bank – and federal regulators’ failure to maintain its vacant properties since then – erupted at Tuesday’s meeting of the Winder Downtown Development Authority.
Using several choice words, DDA chairman Mike Rice said the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. needs to clean up the three former Peoples Bank properties it still owns downtown and he called on city officials to make sure that happens.
He said the city government should mow the grass, remove the weeds that are growing feet high and do whatever else is needed to clean up the sites and then send the FDIC a bill every week.
If the agency doesn’t pay up, he said, “Go to the courthouse and file a lien against the federal government.”
In a tongue-lashing that grew in intensity with each word, Rice said: “To hell with the federal government... They are not going to come into our town and destroy our ship. It’s bull crap.”
He added: “As far as I’m concerned, the FDIC can kiss my ass. I’m tired of them coming in and destroying what we have.”

Why don't we file a lien against THOSE when the owners continually do Nothing to clean them up or repair them?
Oh, I forgot, those belong to Good ole Boys.....
Here the idiot Rice is jumping up and down trying to fight with the "feds" when he ought to be sweeping up around his OWN back door.
Why isn't he pitching a fit with the "local" slum lords????
Somebody needs to boot all these Good Ole Boys OUT of this town, and start all over.
Get real and put your jealous attitude to work. Buy the buildings from him. Fix them up. don't listen to sound business sense that he tried on numerous occasions to share. You see where we are now.
I hear from a reliable source - On North Broad, the permits have been filed and the old Ingles building is scheduled for demolition beginning Monday/Tuesday. Now if we can just get rid of that old Pet milk facility ...Who owns THAT property? they need a nudge from Mr Rice I think.......................
care of our community and then fight the foes.
Next!
***In a tongue-lashing that grew in intensity with each word, Rice said: “To hell with the federal government... They are not going to come into our town and destroy our ship. It’s bull crap.”***
Sounds like a little retaliation for his wife being fired from that bank?
mouth-breathing conservatives do? Cut taxes on billionaires and start another war to boost Halliburton profits.
And just why would you expect someone to spend a fortune on a building downtown that cannot be rented. Why would anyone want to rent a building that would be a high rent if proper money was spent to bring it into compliance and rental standards. Remember, the majority of you voted against the 1 cent splost for the bypass in 1990 that would have taken the truck traffic out of downtown. The cost then was 4.5 millionin splost funds and 12.5 millionin State funds to construct the bypass from Hwy. 11 at Publix to Hwy. 53 beyond the hospital. What was the latest estimate for the current proposed bupass now...just under a hundred million.
Now you sit around and complain because buildings are deterioating because no one wants to locate downtown because of the traffic.
Let's see, I guess most of you would be happy if Maynard would tear down the old building and leave an ugly gaping hole in Athens Street... but back to Mr. Rice. I am appreciative of him and all of the other people that volunteer their time to sit on these worthless boards and authorities where you just spin your wheels trying to get anything done. You butt your head against lazy politicians, useless complainng citizens and the lack of support or funding to do anything.
So go ahead...run down some more people who try and make a difference in this community. What have most of you that are complaining about Mr. Rice, Maynard, Thompson and others done for this town or county?
We HAVE to make some changes people! it HAS to start now!
This community obviously doesn't appreciate all your years of service. At least you did your rant in public with your name attached. these people hide behind a computer screen and do nothing but complain. From the rants you've received it looks like a bunch of locals who envy your success and a bunch of newcomers who couldn't make it else where and ended up in Winder, Ga. No wonder they're so bitter.
It's true the FDIC has raped the community of Winder along with numerous other communities nationwide. Unfortunately kissing your ass won't solve this problem, and it's obvious that community involvement isn't going to materialize. I do very much appreciate your effort and I applaud your truthfullness. To paraphrase Lincoln " to stand quiet and allow a wrong to continue is as unjust as the wrong being done" at least you didn't stand by quietly.
thanks,
