Starting Oct. 1, Winder’s natural gas customers will have a new way to help people who have trouble paying their natural gas bills each winter.
Mike Jewell, director of the city’s gas department, told the city council Tuesday night that customers will be able to round up their own natural gas bills to the nearest dollar. The pennies donated will go to the Heating Energy Assistance Team, a non-profit organization that assists thousands of elderly and other Georgians every year.
“It is the oldest non-profit energy assistance program in the state, and we are proud to be a part of it,” Jewell said.
He also announced that his department’s annual fundraiser at last weekend’s Jug Tavern festival raised more than $1,200 for the heating assistance program.
