A Highway 124 house fire that left a family of 10 displaced last week was started by a child who was playing with matches. According to press release issued by Barrow County Emergency Services, the Fire Investigation Team has listed the fire as a human act.
“The child was playing with matches while the mother was attempting to cook dinner,” said Chief Investigator Blair Durst. "The child set a bed skirt on fire in a bedroom of the home. The mother attempted to extinguish the flames by smothering the fire, but was unable to and the fire grew in size. She then decided to evacuated all the children from the home versus attempting to extinguish the rapidly growing fire.”
Authorities say they are glad the mother evacuated the home when she did. In this case, a family lost their home and all their possessions as a result of the fire.
