Royston was optimistic that up to 35 percent of Barrow’s registered voters would cast ballots in the primary.
The actual number proved to be much lower.
Of 31,165 registered voters, only 7,405 exercised their right to vote on Tuesday. The 24 percent turnout was even less than the low 30 percent Secretary of State Karen Handel projected for races statewide.
Barrow County voters will have another opportunity to go to the polls on August 5 for the area runoffs. In the biggest race on the ballot, voters will choose either incumbent Doug Garrison or challenger Danny Yearwood as the next chairman of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners.
