Based on the first two days of candidate qualifying this week, Winder is likely to be the prime political hot spot in this year’s municipal races.

On Monday, Mayor Chip Thompson and his challenger, Councilman David Maynard, both qualified as candidates.

Also making it official the first day of qualifying were Incumbent Ward 2 Councilman Charlie Eberhart and challenger Jim Cooley. John Perkins qualified to run for the at-large seat being vacated by Maynard.

On Tuesday, political newcomer Travis Singley qualified to run for the Ward 4 seat being vacated by Councilman Frank Dunagan. Singley is likely to face competition from former Barrow County commission chairman Doug Garrison, but as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Garrison had not made it to Winder City Hall to qualify.

In response to an inquiry from the Barrow Journal, he responded in an email that it is “early yet.”

Asked if the deluge of negative blog posts following the announcement of his candidacy had changed his mind about running, Garrison wrote, “Bloggers don’t bother me.”

AUBURN
In Auburn, Mayor Linda Blechinger and Council member Peggy Langley both qualified to run for re-election. Council member Dorissa Shackelford was expected to qualify on Wednesday.

STATHAM
In Statham, Mayor Robert Bridges tossed his hat in the ring for another term. The only other early qualifier was Perry Barton, who is running for an at-large council seat being vacated by Joe Hayes.

BRASELTON
In Braselton, incumbent District 3 Councilman Tony Funari led the pack by qualifying on Monday. The next day incumbent District 1 Councilman Richard Mayberry made his re-election bid official.

BETHLEHEM
Bethlehem’s qualifying wasn’t scheduled to start until Wednesday, but Mayor Sandy McNab reportedly is running again.

CARL
As of the newspaper’s Wednesday morning print deadline, there was no word out of the Town of Carl.

Qualifying for most of the municipal races ends Friday, and anyone interested in becoming a candidate should stop by their city hall. The elections are scheduled for Nov. 8.

Bloggers vote and participate more than most in campaigning.I guesse he figures that not too many bloggers live in the 4th ward.

What an arrogant jerk! Doug doesn't care about bloggers? Pretty much Doug doesn't care about anything but money and power. He has a strong track record of poor attitude towards public opinion, unless he can gain from it. I'm sure that he is trying to decide if the proceeds from being on the council would be worth the bother, or if the real estate folks should try and install a lesser known goon. We do not need any more of Doug's poison. He helped dismantle agriculture in Barrow as an extension agent, he ruined Farm Bureau as it's head, and he milked every dime from both the BOE and the BOC with his "leadership." We certainly don't need any more of his kind of help.

And he actually claims he's going to run for office. Poor deluded creature! So, I understand why Garrison wouldn't be alarmed about the ramblings of a collection of kooks & nuts.

There are plenty of blogs filled with wise and reasonable opinions. I haven't seen any from Barrow residents, but I'm sure they exist.

Even a blind blogger finds an acorn occasionally. The vast majority of blogs are filled with stupid, worthless drivel, written by people who type about as well as chimpanzees. It is, however, intermittently entertaining. Barrow stuff, on the whole, is not much different from most other blogs. I mean, it's not like the ajc stuff, originating from the cosmopolitan yuppie-mecca of Atlanta is much better. Barrow is, however, predictable: drunken bible-thumpers hollering "Obama is a commie!"

You are right, with voter apathy and an off year election all he needs is the church turn out to get the vote to represent his minority interest. Do you really think the Good Ol' boy party could hold power if more then 10% of the county voted?

Mayor Thompson is a VERY nice and charming individual and a Good Man. However as major he is impotent being unable or unwilling to make the kind of changes at City Hall that it sorely needs. He allows a subordinate to rule the roost. With a change in mayor, hopefully personnel changes will be made

Insider is corret. Even Alah Akbar (though practicing muslim's opinion is of no value). Winder's problems are too big, and being nice will not resolve them. A Change in Mayor is a critical first step to a responsible city government.

Why don't you ask Yearwood to sell it? After all HE is the Chairman of the BOC isn't he? With revenue projections in the dump, getting a few bucks for the land might help the county stay afloat until they can find someone in the budget and finance dept. of the BOC who can add and subtract......

Do you folks really know how hard it is to unseat a sitting small town mayor? Ain't gonna happen. David Maynard is a fine man, but is not currently the mayor. The inside clicke will reelect Thompson.
How many city employees live in the city? Most don't want to upset the apple cart. They will overwhelmingly vote Thompson.
If Garrison decides to seek Ward 4, you can bet he has tested the waters and found them favorable. Those of you here that rant about Garrison more than likely don't live in ward 4, therefore, can only bitch.
Two to one says that if Garrison runs, he wins and Three to one says Thompson wins...any takers.

I attend the monthly council meetings and the council speaks with relevance, the mayor doesn't. What little business-sense city hall has is in the council, the mayor has zero. The mayor is a fine man but it's time for a change.

Bob Dixon don't even know know what HE is saying, Sonny Morris is so lost he would need a road map to get back to his right mind, Frank Dunagun and Charlie Eberheart could be sleeping for all I know. You must be at a different council meeting. Winder may very well need a new direction but we don't need David Maynards. We have one more day maybe someone else will throw their name in the mix.

David would probably do the smart thing and let Don run the city. David is running just to unsurp Chip Thompson so that a couple of people in leadership roles currently at City Hall will be discharged while reducing a few salaries. I would vote Thompson over Maynard any day though, because Maynard = Garrison, and Jerry Maynard running things: TWO realtors!

Beth, pls believe me when I tell you, Maynard is the lessor of two incompotent people. The only reason to vote for Maynard is to remove Sabrina and Penny, then reducse some of the other ridiculous salaries at City Hall. Chip would be a wonderful friend, and a good neighboor, but is pitiful in how he lets two unqualified women run City Hall. Its disgracefull ! Voting for Maynard is like voting for John McCain. Reasons are obvious
