County voters will have two questions on their ballots Nov. 8.

In addition to deciding whether a county manager should run the day-to-day operation of their government starting in 2013, they also will decide whether to allow stores in unincorporated areas of the county to sell beer and wine by the package on Sundays.

In a 4-3 vote decided by chairman Danny Yearwood, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night agreed to include Sunday sales on the ballot for the countywide referendum.

Yearwood added the issue to the meeting’s agenda, saying he felt it would only be fair to allow county retailers to have the same opportunity that retailers in Auburn, Braselton and Winder would have if approved by their voters in the municipal elections the same day.

Adding the hot-button issue to the county’s ballots also would likely increase voter turnout for the countywide referendum.

In Tuesday’s vote commissioners Larry Joe Wilburn, Steve Worley and Ben Hendrix voted yes. Commissioners Eva Elder, Isaiah Berry and Billy Parks voted no.

No accident Yearwood broke the tie in favor of adding this to the fall ballot. More alcohol sales means more tax revenue for empty county coffers. It also means more alcohol flowing into county citizens, who then get behind the wheel and drive on our roads..........something to consider when you vote. No articles in our media about a shortage or lack of availability of alcohol in Barrow County, At least not yet anyway.........

You guys are so silly. Do you really think that if we get wine & beer sales on Sunday that the streets will become more dangerous than they are now? Do you think that now alcoholics are not already stocked up for their Sunday drinking? If so, you are being very naive.
Sunday beer & wine sales may help tax revenue, which would be a good thing.
Before Jack & DuWayne lable me as a drunk, I rarely drink anything stronger than iced tea, but I will vote for Sunday package sales.

I do not drink alcohol by choice. It is not a moral or ethical decision, it is my right as a freedom loving adult.
It is NOT my place( nor anyone else's) to prohibit any other freedom loving adult from drinking alcohol whenever they choose.
This is just one more pathetic attempt for the self righteous to try and dictate everyone else's lives.
Doesn't matter one iota to me whether it is sold on Sundays or not, I won't be buying it.
It DOES matter to me when people are not free to govern themselves because of what a few think.

Heres an idea then beth, why dont we follow odies lead and make it ok to take currently illiegal drugs, like cocaine, methamphetamine,stuff like that an all. think of the saving we would have on jail costs and court costs.
Of course you wouldnt have to actually take the drugs yourself, just make sure it was ok if someone wanted to.

I notice you only brought up cocaine and meth. Why not mention marijuana? Oh that's right because if pot were "legal" the roads WOULD be a safer place! Study after study has been done, and it is no question that driving while "stoned" is FAR less dangerous than driving drunk!
Why would you even bring up "the roads"-it is still, and always should be against the law to drive impaired. Doesn't matter what you are impaired on, you should not be allowed to drive impaired.
Yes, ending the war on drugs would definitely clear up the court backlog, free up the LEOS to investigate some REAL crimes, and end the need for new jail facilities due to overcrowding.

It is a ignorant jab at the bible belt in this country. Revenue will not increase by more than a fraction of a percent. Prohibition be it alcohol or drugs has proven to be a foolish pursuit. The sales of alcohol have nothing to do with impaired driving. Peoples personal choices do directly correlate. If people make stupid choices then you can't place prohibition on that. What people choose to do on their own property is their business be it whatever vice they choose. This vote does not change Ga law. If they are stupid enough to drive drunk, do you think they are going to change their mind regardless of if they have to go to the local restaurant for alcohol rather then the gas station or package store.

FYI for all against the vote for alcohol sales: I worked in many restaurants and saw many people come in and drink 'til their "fill" and turn around and drive home. Who's to say that if we have sales on Sundays, that it might STOP people from drinking in restaurants and driving? It might not, but it is another situation to think about. As for Sunday sanctity, I'm am a Christian, however because we live in America (with religious freedom), there are many citizens that are NOT Christians, so Sundays are just another day to them. To me it's about your right to vote and freedom. Use it as you will. It's not about ignorance, illiteracy, or people getting stoned. It's a simple vote. Vote for what you think is right, and then if it doesn't turn out how you want, deal with it. That is part of the voting FREEDOM we have in America. And PLEASE remember that voting is a priviledge, not a right. Don't take it for granted.

Carrie, you confuse a drink with a drunk. People can drink without getting drunk. You obviously are under the mistaken impression that that's not so.

Clear up any doubt. It is so, that people can enjoy a drink, a glass of wine, or a beer and still not get drunk. It won't impair judgement, it won't lead to improper behavior, and it won't make fools out of all of us (trust me, you don't need to be drunk to do that).

USAFA is in the Western Athletic Conference, or WAC. Prep school games are sanctioned under the WAc conference. There is another article on todays paper concerning fines levied against people in superior court. Go and look... you will see after reading that most are for DUI and drug offenses, the fines total 21007 dollars.In one court for one month.
Do we need another day for citizens to get bent? do we need to legalize drugs ?

See here is the problem with Sundays and DUI’s. I can go right now on a Sunday and drink myself drunk at any restaurant in the county that sells alcohol by the glass. Then I can pay my tab walk outside and get in my car and drive home drunk. OR I can drive, Sober, up to the local store and buy my beer or wine or whatever my pleasure. Drive home, Sober. Get on my lawnmower and pop a cold one and spend the rest of the Sunday afternoon at home in my yard or house. Drink as much or as little as I want to and never get on the road to get a DUI on Sunday.
So here is the thing. I like to drink. I drink on Sundays. You vote no for Sunday sales I Buy my beer on Saturday and drink on Sunday. You vote yes on Sunday Sales I by my beer on Sunday and drink on Sunday. Either way I enjoy a cold adult drink, voting yes or no only changes when I buy my drinks not when I drink them. This vote will not keep people from drinking and it will not keep stupid people from driving drunk.

You don't understand. It is now legal to drink on Sunday. This will not change. If drinking is as much of a sin as you make it out to be, you should attempt to have drinking on Sundays outlawed, not should sales be made on Sunday. It is not a sin to purchase an item on Sunday.

Ok, really? Does it REALLY matter if it's sold on Sunday or not? The hard core drinkers can always do what they have done in the past...load up on Saturday (you know buy cases and fifths). Having lived in other states that had Blue Sunday laws, there really isn't that much of an increase in revenue from Sunday sales.

Personally I think all the jibberjabber going back and forth complete with name calling and insults says more about the quality of people in this county than the Blue Law.
