Taking Winder City Hall by surprise Monday, Councilman David Maynard announced he is giving up his at-large seat in order to challenge Mayor Chip Thompson’s re-election.

“It was a big surprise,” said a source. “No one at city hall had any clue he was moving forward in that direction.”

The mayor reportedly had heard through the grapevine that Maynard might oppose him, but wasn’t convinced the one-term councilman was serious.

That changed when Maynard broke the news in a phone call, telling Thompson that he had come to his decision Sunday night.

Maynard told the newspaper shortly before placing that call that while he appreciates Thompson’s public service, he thinks Winder needs a mayor who will work more openly with the full council.

“Honestly there have been things the mayor and staff have worked on that the council has not learned about until things were going down the road a little ways,” he said. “I don’t know that they should be spending time and money on things without at least an idea of whether the council wants it.”

Citing specifically a $4.9 million federal loan that the administration successfully applied for and the council rejected earlier this year, Maynard said: “Even after the council made it clear they did not want it, they spent a lot of money trying to secure it without even talking to any council members.”

Anybody is better than Chip Thompson, but do we REALLY need the realtors' brother in office? Come on David is a nice guy, but does NOT have the fortitude it takes to run the city! Another Good ole boy!

Maynard has as a city councilman had is own personal agenda at heart that is directly in correlation with his business and his brothers business. He believes that the city is fine just the way it is and has no desire to approve anything to help Winder move forward as a progressive city. Is that really who we want as our mayor. I will fully support chip for re-election.

How narrow-minded to judge somebody by others they are related to. Why should it matter if you like who he is related to. He can stand on his own merits and does not have to depend on someone else for his brains or decision making.
There are so many people in this City who would be great leaders that have ties to the Real Estate and Construction world because those professions are made up of smart business people.
I don't think voters should view that as a negative. We are in dire need of younger minds and more progressive thinking on the council and in the Mayor's role.

I could care less what his last name is and who he is related to. My comment is based on his track record since he took his position as city councilman. He might be young as you suggest but is a far cry from being a progressive thinker and wanting to move winder forward. But this is only my opinion and we are all titled to our own opinion.

Care to enlighten us with some specific examples of his narrow-mindedness. I have known David a long time. He is an honest person and if he took a stand it was because he thought it was the right one to take.

Mr. Maynard is a fine and upstanding Councilman. To put these posts into perspective, roughly 20-30 people post mostly negative comments about any given topic on this website. Some post come from people outside of Winder and Barrow County. So out of roughly 15,000 people, around 20 have negative comments be it tax abatement, Granite Hotel, Doug Garrison, or Beth and the Anons. Take it for what its worth......that being irrelevant.

I believe Mr. Maynard is a builder of commercial properties. Commercial properties provide businesses with a location in which to operate. The businesses in turn hire employees. The employees in turn pay sales taxes and property taxes when they spend their paychecks on goods and housing. Jeez, ya'll don't have a clue about economics do you.

So, Beth, he is a puppet on a string. Can you divulge who holds the top of the string and controls his movements. How could his election keep others out? The race is open to anyone with the qualifying fee and citizenship requirements. Why don't you run or are you even a citizen of Winder? Your ignorance is showing.

I read this blog often but post rarely. The same ole rhetoric coming from the same ole posters. The "weath envy" is thick here.
Every time someone successful offers themselves for public office, they are automatically attacked as crooks and bums. Does it make you feel better about your own failures and worthless lives to criticise someone else who has made a success? I don't have a dog in this election, however I admire anyone who will put themselves out for public criticism. Why would anyone want to seek public office in this thankless community. Does not matter what kind of job you do as a citizen or elected official, your going to be criticised...for at least trying.

How many of you clowns that continue to criticise others have offered your services to this community? Better yet, how many of you actually take the time to vote. I find that most that are constantly bitching about elected representatives do not even vote.

You don't like the people offering themselves for elected office, get your worthless butts out there and see if you can do a better job....then see how you like all your buddies here start calling you a bum or crook.

I think david would be the right guy for the job.he believes in open government and I like that. I dont think much of the way the current mayor did all those secret shennanigans. I think that if an idea is a good one then it should be brought out, talked about with its merits and its cons. Thompson didnt do that, ergo he isnt qualified in my opinion to be a mayor.
As far as maynards crooked brother goes, well nobody can help what a family member does.
I look forward to working with maynard after 2012.

You know it really amuses me to see (supposedly)grown men behaving like 2 year olds. In previous posts Allah and Jack legg have continuously insulted and degraded certain posters on a regular basis.
The Truth: They can't handle their egos being repeatedly shot down by female posters such as Buffy, Beth, and several others.
You all want to call Beth and Buffy derogatory names, but in truth, Beth has come up with some great ideas. She has voiced her opinion, but posted many ideas to solve the problems addressed.
You belittle Buffy because she doesn't live in this county. She is concerned because she pays Barrow Co. property taxes. ...ie: She is a taxpayer! It doesn't matter where she lives.

I have asked two legitimate questions, one of Anonymous and one of Beth. Neither has attempted to answer the questions I posed about their allegations concerning Maynard. I'm not afaid of a woman in elected office. I am fearful of someone who throws out unfounded allegations. And, if she has the nerve, let her run for office. By the way, there are already several female elected officials in Barrow Co and the Barrow Co municipalities so she won't be the first.

I read the print version of both the county news and the journal. David is already making excuses for his brother, talking bad about city empolyees, and admitting he don't go to city hall to seek information. No wonder he seems lost at council meetings. He expects to show up 2 hours a month and know everything that goes on within the city govt. He is complaining about the Mayor and staff keeping information when it seems he is also guilty of not seeking out info himself.

anyone who gets insider info from city councilmen about property that the city is going to be rezoning or plan to buy is a crook. get rich quick scheme, I'll scratch your back if you put money in my pocket...that's just like when the city spent all that money on H.S. Feldman inc to come in and run the city for them "Water treatment,wastewater treatment the new Cedar creek plant", and look who's on Feldman payroll now, the same city councilmen that elected for this to happen. how many local tax paying citizens lost their local jobs when this happened. Well if this weeks Barrow Journals online pole is any indication then Thompson might as well say by-by. Last time I looked it was 75% Maynard and 18% Thompson. Now that's not even close.

Folks I know both of these fine people and they are both very good people but what you need to take into consideration is how well the curent mayor has ran the city and the great things he has brought to this city. Mayor Thompson is and a great mayor and a good business person. Has anyone checked out Mr. Maynord's properties - yeah not so much of a business man, huh? Do we really want to see our town turn out like his "investments"? Do your homework citizens.

I only wish I could share with you all that I know about the goings-on at Winder City Hall. I know most of the secrets, and lies that have been told to the City council. Chip Thompson is weak ! He has deliberately withheld info from the Council. He is easily manipulated by his close confidant - the City Clerk. Don't judge David by his family ties. If Chip remains in office, the mishadling of City affairs will only get worce. Much worce ! I emplore you to vote for David Maynard as a Vote Against Chip Thomson and his City Clerk AND HR person - ALL three need to go ASAP
